    I think that is the best thing to do, because for a while the change of geopolitical status of Bohemia roughly coincided with the period/style of glass manufacture.

    Biedermeier is also used for furniture, clothing, jewellery, etc, it is just the style of the period. The term is not really very nice. Bieder means to be very set in ones ways, when you add Meier to it, it is a name for small-minded petty bourgeois.

    It is. A term I heard a lot in my childhood to describe Germans (sorry Germans:(). In defense of my family, they were part German as well as part French, etc. etc.

    That is what we are missing in North America, the more knowledgeable experiences and lifestyle of living in Europe, with smaller countries, closer proximity and familiarity of the other cultures etc.
    A lot of our documentation for the Bohemia/Czech glass is in German. Using a translator tool on the internet, does not capture full meanings, I notice. It's our loss. :oops:

    I grew up in England hearing the same things, I'm sure German children heard things too. It clouds the mind and distorts ones thoughts for years .. I have German in my ancestry too, plus Ireland, Scotland, Italy and Sweden .. probably others too :) .. Joy.

    Those 'national characteristics' are always caricatures. Sometimes good-natured, but not always.
    Wars don't help in getting a more accurate view. A united Europe does help, at least here. And even something like tourism, travel discounts for students, etc. My niece from Britain has visited just about every EU country and made friends everywhere. That is what we need. She also has dual nationality.

    If you ever need help translating specific German terms, just ask.

    Thank you AJ. I might do that. What I find is the German way of combining words together, it seems, to express a different meaning, which is not easy to translate.

    We have our own caricatures here too, of ourselves in Canada and our two languages, USA and all their own different regional differences, as well as the Latin countries from Mexico on down.

    Plus the wars have also left their deep marks. Not so bad now, but when I grew up Germans were shunned here, there was antisemitism, and a feeling of un-appreciation towards my nation and our huge efforts in many ways during WWII, as we were part of the Commonwealth and were deeply involved in both World Wars. We lost a part of a whole generation of young men twice.

    Anyway, I would rather concentrate on the now, and affirm our connections instead of brood about the past. It is a WWW era. Unique and ever changing. :happy:

    Yes, indeed the wars DID in fact leave their deep marks .. I can still hear the rantings of my now Deceased father :(, it's taken me a good deal of my lifetime to overcome the hatred that was drilled into us as small children .. I hope and pray that my mind is free of those angry feelings that we little kids were subject to, both at home and at school. Anyway, enough of that .. we must try to love and care for all .. Joy.

    To us in Europe there were other wars as well, the last one in Bosnia. The overthrow of Fascist regimes in southern Europe and Communist ones in Eastern Europe is also fairly recent.
    It is so important for us to get along, with each other and the rest of the world. This is something that small European countries like Denmark and The Netherlands always stress whenever our bigger neighbours are at odds with one another.
    When you live in a small country there is always a border nearby, so you know you have to make sure the relationship is good. And many families extend across borders, we have to take care of one another.

    It is a pity most of you don't read German, because their literature is wonderful as well. We often quote poetry by Heinrich Heine, especially the line "die Gedanken sind frei" - thoughts (ideas) are free, written at a time of oppression.
    And German classical music....

    German has an enormous vocabulary and uses many words to say a simple thing, English is one of the most simple European languages and uses very few words. Dutch is somewhere in between, and has similarities with Middle English. It is the most archaic of Germanic languages, which makes it beautiful in a historic sense.

    @Christmasjoy
    It was the same in my home, my dad was a veteran, his dad was a veteran, and the women also had to navigate with the rationing and little available goods for the home and losing their brothers and other relatives.
    I also never took on this negative bitterness, which can pervade your whole life. There is enough to deal with graciously, without it.

    @AJ
    You might laugh but I read German sometimes, just to get the feel of it. The only German words we knew were from War movies, silly to think of it. I'm sure Germany has a very rich and long term culture and artistic excellence.
    We were aware of the conflicts in Europe and the horrible things that happened there in Bosnia. We also celebrated the fall of the Berlin wall, and the new freedom for some populations.
    Now, we have a whole new set of concerns, violent terrorism, and it's consequences for many. All we can do is be aware and help if we can.

    I wanted to share that I was looking into the recent Czech glass producers and their wares this morning, there is a company that makes these red cut glass pieces right now. So, definitely a long history and production period.

    Great to see the details, this is much better quality than what I owned and what they produce now. There is no texture on the recent stuff, no cut, no etchings, just flat. Thank you.
