How much time have you got?
It is an episode from the Ramayana from Bali and would have been pretty new when it was brought over.
The Ramayana is one of those Hindu epics with as many names as a phone book, but the very short version is:
King Rama was married to Sita (Ramo and Sinto in Javanese/Balinese) - the demon king Ravanna kidnapped Sita - Rama and his loyal friend, the monkey god Hanuman (Anoman in Jav/Bal) rescue Sita.
This panel is the part where Rama and Hanuman with his monkey army are fighting the mighty demon army of Ravanna in his country of Lanka (Sri Lanka).
Hanuman is the tragic hero who doesn't survive, but Rama and Sita are reunited. Hanuman is still the symbol of the loyal friend and protector of women, he is the white, monkey-faced noble.
Rama and Sita are seen as the perfect couple. Rama is to the left of the tree in the third picture.

 

Huh............ another family portrait around the holiday table....................

 

Oh, and yes it is painted on cotton.

Hanuman is also a protector of the household. Many houses in Bali used to have statues of Hanuman as keris holders for visitors, a bit like an umbrella stand for keris. You'd leave your keris by the door.
This Hanuman was painted gold as a sign of gratitude for protecting the house:

 

There is a name for these cloths, but it just won't come to me. It will, usually in the middle of the night.
A good price here in The Netherlands would be 125 euro. Indonesian art is cheaper here than in Britain, but there is the shipping limitation.
Looking forward to other treasures from the house, if you can get them.

The ceramic lamp looks Chinese. Do you have more detailed pictures of the brass ones?
Most of those wooden plates and dishes are teak from Thailand, the square ones are ca 1970, the others are probably the same age, so spot on for todays fashion.

I'd like to pull off a few rounds out to 100 feet !
The thingy is a Lazy Susan....& as with all that wood.....maybe not so old....but the stuff really shines when it's cleaned up.
The grain POPS !!!

 

Around here monkey pod wood pieces are generally given away, but that lazy susan might just move. The inlay looks much more promising. And that table...Brad would have been there with a crate.(LOL)

 

And it did come to me in the middle of the night, the painting style is called Kamasan. It comes from the Klungkung district, East Bali.

 

Yay! Kayak and kamasan, has a nice ring to it.

And you've got some more wall space now.

 

I wouldn't want to drive behind him, whatever he has on the roof rack!
