Came across this old cabinet card, and found it very interesting. (It was in some of my Mother-in-Laws stuff) I'm curious what she is holding. Some kind of loop? Is this a profession? Sport? Is she an actress? Her shoes are very interesting as well.

Just wondering if anyone can help with what she is, her outfit, what she's holding, etc. I enhanced the second photo just to help with details....... antiquesite.jpg hoop.jpg IMG_1617.jpg

    Thanks!!

Dance, I'd think. She's holding a hoop. Here's an artistic dance class holding fans. Typical of era.

But not a lady. A girl. (Her hair is down.)

Checked my 1888 "The American Girl's Handy Book".....NOTHING popped out....kind of surprising, as the dress and sketches looked so similar......she kind of looks like she might be wearing night dress, sleeping cap and slippers......plus the 'hoop' in hands.....

She may be young, but she appears to be wearing a wedding ring.
I'm more inclined to agree with Aqui about wearing night clothes.

"Mirror Mirror who's the fairest of them all?"
Can't figure out why she would be staring at an embroidery hoop? Have no idea what that hoop actually would be.

Maybe she was an ancestor of Hudsucker?

Oh a game of some kind.
So not night clothes but the uniform of the game. Makes more sense.

I was thinking no respectable young lady would be photographed in her night clothes. So was coming back to comment and saw your post.

Maybe she used the hoop to make the thing on her head. My first thought was embroidery, but I see only a single hoop, not the 2 needed for holding needle work. Do the rosettes on the hoop match the ones on the footwear? The birth of rhythmic gymnastics.

    I'm calling her 'Myra'.

IMHO she's in costume, possibly for theatre or exercise or dance. Just a guess!

I'm getting a calisthenics vibe from her--but the hoop thing is throwing me off (calisthenics used a lot of rods as part of the exercises, but I'm not finding hoops being used in my Google searches).

Appears to be wearing shoe covers, which is generally for a performance art.
    Cool find!

NOW, re-looking, she looks like she's REALLY concentrating on tossing it at/over something!!! Ring toss!! Slumber party game??? Follow her eyes through the hoop & her steadying her hand!!!

Look what ELSE I found....NOT EXACT, but CLOSE....I gather the game started in Germany, but came HERE from France......What they're NOT using in the image are the sticks, but appears there are ribbons on @HippAntiques image, or maybe they only had one pair of sticks, or maybe they adjusted the game to suit their situation????? It's just a closer possibility, IMHO!!

These may have more to do with the length of time she had to hold the pose than with the needs of the game.

Yes, as Myron (played by Rex Reed of all people) after his surgery.
