    Hi,
I guess this would be considered a wall decoration rather than a mask - it is a little creepy (to me) with the way the eyes are but I still bought it. Made of bamboo with some kind of animal hair. The pieces on the face are made with some sort of clay, you can see fingerprints in it. This is 6 1/2"L.
Any ideas on where this came from appreciated.
    thanks for looking. DSC01382.jpg DSC01400.jpg DSC01383.jpg DSC01384.jpg

Sorry to intrude - but it resembles me with a sinus infection and hangover, just before a visit to my barber..............

What the heck was the name for those pudgy little nekkid guys made of rubber with the wild hair? 70's or so, but they make a come-back every so often. Whatever they're called, that was the vision I had immediately upon seeing your mask, CX.

Maybe you mean "Sawfish" - Australian Sawfish I think are on the endangered list but you know............could have been an older piece.

So if that piece is from a sawfish here are the ranges it could be from.

Range: Together, both U.S. species of sawfish occur in the Gulf of Mexico and along the borders of southern states. Apart from the U.S. species, there are five other species of sawfish which are found along the borders of the Indian Ocean, the northeastern part of Australia, and as far north as China and Japan. The U.S. species are also found along South America, near the Gulf of California and on the west coast of Africa.

Or sawfish? But very possibly, there are palm fronds where the bases are spiked, we've seen those before. Hard to tell which it is.
At any rate, this item is beyond my experience.
Trolls, yes, they are still around, some people find them collectible even.

    Yes yes....Sawfish.........I was distracted...

It 1st looked to me like an Aloe frond..or plant....and the bamboo could have come from a garden store...so..it's an art piece...from somewhere.......

Believe it or not, I once had something similar. I asked about it online and did find some info. Here's part of my description:
The large piece at the back is a partial gourd as is the bulbous bit projecting in front. What was used to build up the jaw and other ceramic-like decorations, I do not know. It may be ceramic, or some kind of composite or resin. It looks like ceramic and it’s hard (possibly putty). There are macuna beans (aka hamburger beans, deer eyes, sea beans). That serrated tongue (about 4” long) looks very nasty. It’s probably the pectoral fin of a granulated catfish, giving the object a South or Central American provenance.

I think yours has a more African look. My ID could very easily have been wrong.

Hey - a relative! Of the OP's piece, not mine................I think................

I assume that everyone has looked for a signature, so I won't ask the obvious..............

lol bakers, I couldn't figure out what you were thinking of so I googled 'rubber naked guys wild hair' - really a bad idea. I wish I had thought of Trolls:)
Thank-you MOS, they look very similar. Certainly some sort of putty that has hardened.
Mansons, No signature that I could find. I can't tell what the eyes are made of, I though maybe some sort of seed that had been painted.

The red and black seeds on yours might be Abrus precatorius (jequirity, Rosary Pea, Sailor's Valentine, Crab's Eye), which is native to India.

thanks MOS, I'll check them out. I didn't look that closely at them, just thought painted but maybe they aren't.
I'm just amazed that there is a similar piece out there:)
