Picked this up at a yard sale this morning for pocket change.
I can't seem to find any other artists that sign like that but her.
    The visible view of the painting is 5 1/2" x 6 1/2"
Someone took the time and effort to have it professionally framed.

Any and all help and critiques welcome.

I don’t think that the outer mount was cut for this painting as it doesn’t fit. JMHO

    Distracting, isn't it?

It's like a shadow box effect. The outer mat is 1/4" above the other mat. Only thing is the Sig doesn't look right because she signed with an F first? But who else could it be?

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be her. The frame doesn't look contemporary to the work though. (The artist's dates are 1859-1948.) What does the back look like?

Newer frame from Capital Fine framing in Rancho Cordova CA. Black paper back.

That frame screams 1986 . Doesnt go with that charming little picture at all. But then Im a huge advocate of switching out frames on art, much to my purist friends horror.

Agree. Not becoming at all. For one thing much too large. Capital Fine Framing doesn't seem to exist anymore. But makes sense that framed in Sacramento as the artist's home town.

Wow she was the daughter of James McClatchy, Founder of the Sacramento Bee.

It may well be a Sacramento scene. Why don't you break open back and see what you find?

The de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University seems to have the largest holding of her work. She might want to contact someone -- the Collections Manager perhaps -- there and see if you can find out more.

If SCU can't/won't help, you can always try the Crocker.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

NICE job on re-framing your picture!!!! It DOES look good, although I think the previous owner was probably trying to be 'artistic' in their framing! I think they mostly, from what I'm seeing, didn't get the image centered well in the double matting.....JUST MHO!!! It STILL looks GREAT!!!!!
