Featured Dutch Opaline Glass Coupe with Silver Handle

Hey everybody!

I have bought an Opaline Glass Coupe with a Silver Handle and Underdish.

Material: Opaline Glass + Silver.
Age: 19th Century.
Origin: The Netherlands.

Dimensions:
Diameter Coupe: 11 cm/ 4,33 inch.
Diameter Dish: 17,6 cm/ 6,93 inch.
Total Height: 16,3 cm/ 6,41 inch.

I have bought this item 3 days ago.
The seller told me it was a Dutch piece,
made by:

-Cornelis Ernst Held, Amsterdam.
(Marked)

But after I received I checked the mark,
and that doesn't seem to be correct.

I've emailed him with my question,
and pictures attached, and he just said:
"Well, then we have a different opinion about that."

I placed it on a dutch forum 2 days ago, with no responses.
I hope somebody can help me out with this.


At first I thought the mark says: I.H. or Z.H.
But yesterday I showed the pictures to a jeweller that I know,
(who doesn't know very much about antiques btw) and he told me
it's probably "Z II".

That would mean it's nd grade silver, and that there's no master sign at all.

(The sword is the old dutch sword)

I'll try to make clearer pictures this weekend!

That jeweller should have his eyes tested, it is not the Z II mark, which is in italics.
The shape of the cartouche around the letters is used by Schoonhoven makers, but maybe not exclusively by them.
People here in The Netherlands often refer to the old and new sword mark, but there were in fact more. The first one from 1814-1905, the second from 1906-1953, the third from 1953 onwards. There was also a double sword from 1814-1864.

I'm from the Netherlands myself by the way.
I mostly buy opaline glass, and this is actually my 3rd
opaline +SILVER item I have bought.

I don't know very much about silver or it's marks really.

You're right with the old & new swords.
I thought there were 5 different ones, and this should be the
oldest.

I'm quite sure that it's made in the 19th Century.

Nice piece, but I'd like to know for sure who made it,
before selling it.

Schoonhoven makers... The only one I know is Van Kempen.
(Because my last piece was made by them)

 

I know, the name is a bit of a give away.

I like that combination of opaline glass and silver, minimalist and stylish.
There have been silversmiths in Schoonhoven for a long time, and it got it's first assay mark in 1629. Nowadays the Dutch silversmith college is in Schoonhoven.
