I bought this item at a thrift store because I found it so bizarre I couldn't take my eyes off it. It is a two-drawer wooden chest with heavy steel legs. I don't think it is particularly old, but I am struggling to find out more information about it; my googling has been totally ineffective. Any opinions about it...or where I can look to find more info? I appreciate all feedback!
Yes, 1980s Memphis-inspired. Going to be the next big trend once MCM runs it's course. You might want to hang on to it for a while (if you plan to resell.) And, of course, enjoy now if you don't. Debora
Even in its heyday, Memphis furniture was fairly rarified. Didn't see too much of it around, except perhaps at Karl Lagerfeld's. Debora
Very post-modern. I think the sensibility draws heavily on Japanese lacquer. Aside from being post-modern, I'm not seeing the Memphis Group here.
very 1980's ,I love it ! I bet you it wasnt cheap new,and may well be very pricey now. No marks anywhere?
Wow. You guys are fast! I appreciate the responses. There are no marks. There is a piece of scotch tape on the back with the number 51059-197 handwritten on it. Not sure what that's about... Interesting point. The paint (or whatever) is so thick I wondered if it was laquer... I was not familiar with the Memphis Group but I will google for more info.
You're right of course. I tend to use as synonyms but, they're not. Still post-modern design found more often -- as I remember -- in commercial furniture than domestic. Debora
I've so wanted to build such furniture. I've had ideas for quite awhile. I fear they will not happen now.
My wife and I saw some similar chairs at an estate sale, quite pricey. My wife loved them, I thought they were just ugly.....
Looks like verybrad and debora were right about the Memphis-inspired idea. I found this item on istdibs which is extremely similar to my $15 thrift store find: https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/s...memphis-style-cabinet-usa-1980s/id-f_5042073/ Thanks again!
