It is a spinet desk but looks like it may actually have been made from an old style grand piano. Size?

    Really....you're title ' Dating desk '.......
    not.....
Can anyone help me find out when this desk was made..? or.....
What date was this desk manufactured in..?

sooo.....the double entendre ... ( a word or phrase open to two interpretations, one of which is usually risqué or indecent.) ....was used in a humorous fashion to suggest that I wished to take your desk out on a romantic date, with amorous intentions that would be frowned upon by it's older relative.

See...that wasn't so hard to understand.....

( Surely you've been around here long enough to know that without some humorous content this site would get boring...suffocate ....& die !! )

I dated that desk and married it. It's in my bedroom though it sees little action....I mean in it's corner....

Late 1800s. Pretty piece. What would I sell it for? Hummmmm. I'm known for high prices but I think mid 300s.

It is big enough to have been made from a piano since some of the earlier ones were this small. If so, someone has done a very nice job with the conversion. Here is a similar piano as originally made. Would think this dates to the 1830s or so. By the 1850s, they began to get larger and heavier with more stout legs. By the 1860s, you began to see scroll legs rather than turned style legs.

Here is a similar desk conversion from a later piano.....

I just got back from a trip to Biloxi. While there I toured the Beauvior..
They had this exact piece, but it was a piano.
The original one to the house was destroyed by the hurricane (but still remains on display in the museum). There's a "new" (antique, but new to the house) piano in there now..

I didn't know if they made matching sets of furniture or not.

Here's the old one, which if my memory serves me correctly, its larger than the one in there now.

I could only find a partial picture of the new, piano on the internet

This one has stouter legs so just a tad later than yours. Best guess on yours ... circa 1840.

I thought 1840s-1850s myself but my boss seems to think turn of the century.
Everything from the early 1900s looks more "dainty" and small compared to this guy.
Reading about the conversions, a lot of them happened during the 1920s-1940s which would explain the machine cut dovetails of the drawers and the more modern looking hinges.

Agree. Those made as desks were smaller. I really think this an older piano. It could have been converted at any time.
