Small Container

  1. Anyone know what this is? It's very small, in one of the pics is a nickel for size reference. It's 10.3 grams. Doubt anyone could find the date.

    Snuff box?
Or a box for what we would call, in perfect Dutch, a 'mouche' or 'tache de beauté' (beauty spot/mark?)?

Its a little small and deep for a snuff box, you have to get thumb and finger in to get a pinch.

The nickel:rolleyes:. Davey, you know your coins, I haven't been anywhere near a nickel since 1982. Translation please?

I was thinking it would be hard to get a pill out of those rounded sides. Or you'd have to turn it upside down and everything would spill on the floor. In my case anyway (clumsy).

From a different part of the world, your box is British, but it reminds me of Sumatran (Indonesia) chalk boxes:

It looks simillar to a perfume pendant. You could dab a little bit of perfume ointment with a finger to place under your nose when you need to mask the surrounding smells. Maybe you already said this with the above replies. I'm not famillar with those terms.

  8. I don't think it's a pendant, there's nowhere for a chain or anything to hang onto.

  9. Typing in "antique pill box" shows similar stuff such as below so my money's on pill box :greedy::wideyed:.

You know what I just realised as I was typing this? It's the exact same thing! The only difference is location of the three hallmarks, which I did not even spot in the first place! (how did I miss it? :D)

  10. Thanks! I would never have found info about it if I didn't know to use the words "pill box" in the search.

Thanks. Don't worry, you're not the only one who forgets this is an international forum.
I am in The Netherlands, Davey is in Britain. We have people here from Australia, different parts of the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe. Still waiting for someone from Antarctica (mad scientist maybe?), then we'll have all continents covered.;)

Just for @Any Jewelry for size comparison.

A beat up Nickel next to a Netherlands 25 Cents (silver of course) and a 1 Gulden also silver.
But just to confuse matters this Nickel contains no nickel, its called a War Nickel, 56% copper, 35% silver and 9% maganese as nickel was required for the war effort.
They went back to nickel alloy in 1946

    Davey...what about the 43, 44 , steel penny......?
one would think the copper and silver of the nickel were also in wartime demand...
    I'm confused...

Thanks, Davey. And thank you for taking my age into account (gulden/guilder).;)
Haven't quite gotten used to euros yet, it's only been 16 yrs, or so.
A nickel would be about the size of a stuiver:

The Cent was zinc coated steel, in 1943 copper became in critical shortage, in 1944 they used spent cartridge cases melted down.
