Very strange hand cut diamant. Is it old ?

Don't ask. I think I scrapped a very old ring a few years ago! Wish I was a bit younger with the bit of knowledge I have now!

Got this diamant which came out of a high karat handmade gold ring which had no hallmarks and was probably very old. The stone looks hand cut in a triangle pyramid shape and decorated with different sized pyramid shaped symbols (hand done or with machinery?).

Never seen something like this. Could it be a old stone? Origins?
Did I made a mistake by scraping the ring!? Yes, think I did.

    :eek::eek::banghead::banghead::rage::rage::punch::punch:!!!

I have seen some diamonds in my time, but I've never seen anything like this. Did you test it?
Can you describe the ring? :banghead::banghead::banghead:
Do you live near Amsterdam? I'm thinking maybe Asscher could know about it (the diamond traders, not the politician;)). They know about the history of diamonds.
You can also contact them: royal@asscher.nl

I think I'll crawl into a corner now and be very depressed for the rest of the day. :(:(. Very depressed.

It's a natural diamond crystal nothing unusual, no cutting involved.

Yes, the diamond shape is natural, and as you say nothing unusual. I think Benny knows that. But the pyramid shapes in the faces of the diamond? I've never seen them in uncut diamonds. Lines, yes:

This one resembles it somewhat, but is not as regular:

    Yes, thanks!
I've never seen those triangles before, even after seeing so many rough diamonds 'in the flesh'. Trigons;). They call it outstanding, and Benny's diamond has much more.
    This is outstanding:

you hit the nail. thx for you help. What a relief the wasn't ancient. Or was it :)

    Learn every day.

    Natural Diamond Octahedron with Trigons

Diamond crystals are an excellent way to capture the completely natural beauty of a gem material. The crystals themselves are often well formed and distinctive - and of course, they are inherently durable. The fact that many of these are quite lustrous certainly helps as well. Here we have a beauty - a classic octahedron of substantial size and great presence. And, what is simply superb is the presence of the classic 'trigon' surface feature on many of the crystal's faces. Whether one large and bold trigon or a series of smaller, more shallow examples, this crystal is simply loaded with them - outstanding!

Depends on what the ring looked like. Uncut diamonds were usually set in rings until the point-cut diamond in the 14th century.
It probably wasn't ancient, but could still have been centuries old.

Yes you'r right. I'm still in the learning process. Have now more time and getting more inot antiques and such. Finding out new infomation and knowledge every new day. Makes me thing at all stuff I've sold in the past for peanuts! If I can remember correctly the ring was handhammerd and looked maybe roman from what I can find on the net. Simple made, handhammerd in high carat with imperfections. To late now anyway and learned not to trow salt in wounds.

I sometimes exchange my currency with jewellery and remove the stones and scrap melt to make it it money. These are some which show higH positive on the tester, expect the white pearl like ones. But kep those because they look nice.

As a lover of antique jewelry and a collector...I'm kind of horrified about the death of so many beautiful pieces. Please don't melt!

Modern mass-produced Chez Garbage of course may be melted with impunity.

One might argue that melting is its best use!

But then again, there are also the things you bought for peanuts, and made a nice profit on.

Yes. I made some decent money selling plain, ordinary silver platters and stuff like that. I wouldn't have sold anything really nice, though.
