I obtained this 1/4 plate ruby ambrotype in a lovely Henning and Eymann case. My best guess is that this is an American civil war era image of a zouave. Any other theories?

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Sounds reasonable to me. I'm not 100% sure it's American, but it appears to be. And you have already identified the case.

Just did a little lookup on the case makers. This is for others who may be reading:

Yes, it is in fine condition. Like Fig, I am not certain that it is a zouave from american civil war. Just an educated guess. Consistent with your thoughts, komo? For a quarter plate, like this, what is your best guess on value? These pieces are quite challenging because of the strong personal and unique appeal associated with each piece.

While I concur with the Zouave attribution ...I'll leave it to more knowledgeable members to offer up thoughts on value.
Like you say.....challenging.....for more reasons than one.
But...a fair market value for the case may be an easier reach..!

To ME (and believe me, I'm no expert!) between the tasseled fez, the cuff chevrons, and the mace he's holding, he looks like a Turkish pre-WWI officer.

I could, of course, be way off!

Bev aka thelmasstuff Colored pencil artist extraordinaire ;)

The woman's clothing does not look American so I'm fairly certain it's not from here.

I am pretty sure that it is a union case designed by Henning and Eymann and produced by Holmes, Booth and Haydens, showing perhaps greek couple. Here is another way example

I'm not even sure Thermoplastic Union Cases of the above type were even a thing or made in Europe and other countries. Most i've seen were attributed to American artists. Also, never judge an image by the case it's in. Images are easily changed out. Could have been done 100 years ago, could have been done right before it entered your hands.

Agree with disassociating the photo from the case...just like painting and a frame!

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!
