Help Identifying Piece

Good Morning! I am hoping someone can help me identify what this is called exactly and what age it may be. I just purchased it yesterday and am totally in love with it but curious about the history. Thanks for any help you may be able to offer!!!

Here in the US, we call this either a buffet or a sideboard and the wood looks like quarter-sawn oak veneer. Roughly 1900, give or take a decade, would have been the height of popularity for this look. If you are somewhere else, Pam, it may be called something else or have a different age range.

Is there are problem with the caster or are you just showing it off?

 

That's what I thought, just wasn't sure. I just was showing it as I wasn't sure if that helped identify the age. So I am glad to hear it is what I thought it was. I can't find any markings anywhere on it to indicate who/when it was made. Would this wood also be called tiger oak? And yes I am here in the US..California.

 

You get those on Belgian pieces from Mechelen. And Mechelen uses oak as well, and historic revival carving, including Brabant lions etc.
In short, I wouldn't be surprised if this buffet was born in Belgium.

 

Yep, Renaissance Revival in the style of Horner (NOT by him) ca. 1900. Looks like some of the grain may have been painted on originally, so beware ever refinishing the piece. Very nice!!

 

Yes, Pam, sometimes by some people called tiger oak. But be careful, as Ghopper has warned, if you decide to refinish.
