Hi all, wanted to get opinions on originality on this “vintage” paper mache pumpkin candy holder. Is it from 40s-50s? Can anyone tell me a marker and if its in fact rare?

    Thanks a bunch like always! E67BBD87-F344-4B8B-A8B9-AA4DAED3FDF8.jpeg AA62E113-89D6-4240-8A40-0959CDF81FB7.jpeg 7D106025-BEB3-4B82-AD36-7A036629C961.jpeg 0D984CDB-C7DD-42EE-933C-60076A18F0A1.jpeg 7C3D4EDE-1F37-4B6C-B9A3-D1DAF3CF20FF.jpeg 19015957-5F3C-49A0-AF19-0F0845E62547.jpeg

These are tough. I have very limited knowledge on these. The article that you provided.... Probably read it 5 times over. And still dont know. It would have to be examined by an expert on here.

thank you so much for your response.

What's Carol's last name? This is a touch I would not expect on a repro, but WDIK about vintage papier mache trick or treat buckets?

Edit: And I can't see a contemporary parent allowing their kid to carry around something with that wire handle.

You can do these tests yourself. If you don't already have a UV flashlight, they're cheap & very useful.

"Most new papers, especially inkjet and laser papers, will fluoresce under long wave black light. Original papers rarely, if ever, fluoresce. Modern synthetic glues used to attach new papers to new lanterns generally fluoresce."

ig. 14-A The colored features on the great majority of old lantern papers appear as smooth continuous fields of solid color.

Fig. 14-B Colored features on many new lantern papers are applied by laser and inkjet printers. Characterized by randomly spaced fuzzy dots of various colors. May include misaligned bands of color.

Great suggestions above. As Brad noted there are a lot of repros out there, but my gut is that this is an older one. Good to check the link, though.

I also noticed the penciled in name --and first thought like Bronwen's, that it was another hopeful sign.

I wonder if @cxgirl would have any thoughts? :cat:

The eyes are the only thing that give me concern.....otherwise, I do think it's old! BUT, nothing says I couldn't be wrong, either.....found this, if it posts, but will also give you the link.....when you come to the bottom of a page, keep hitting "older posts" and you'll see more older stuff on REPROS....

VINTAGE ORIGINAL HALLOWEEN PAPER MACHE' JACK O' LATERN W/ WIRE HANDLE

Unfortunately, someone spent $38 on this reproduction. This is not a vintage pulp JOL. It looks like a quality reproduction, perhaps one done by Stamm House, but it is a reproduction nonetheless. Things to note: the fake wear patterns, the overly thick bale, the unfinished bottom and the fact that it is not pulp.

Except for the EYES, the face, JOL and teeth look pretty similar to yours....OTOH, maybe YOU can tell if YOURS IS PULP.....that would be GOOD!!!

    The link is here:https://halloweencollector.com/fakes-etc,
but when you click on what I posted above, I believe it's the same!

Given the constraints of JOL-ness, they look quite different to me, particularly the teeth:

The face on OP does not seem overly sculpted for a pumpkin (except the nose), the wear spots look natural to me & so does the wear where the handle inserts into the body, like someone was swinging it.

I see the one that you posted Aquitaine looks like a repro to my original posted picture. I will run the uv light to the paper, which I agree with others is my only concern, but then again it could be good too! Idk its a tough one...... and I paid a pretty penny on this one.... Any and all opinions welcomed. You all are great! :)

Hi Matt, welcome to the forum:)
the bottom looks good to me, but I'm not an expert and the reproductions are hard to tell unless a person has it in hand. I've been fooled before:(
You should post to this Facebook group, a few people there that can tell the difference from photos. Also if you like/collect Halloween it is a great group:)

@Bronwen....you're absolutely right....the teeth DO look different, as do the eyes, PLUS, Matt's does look more like pulp. AND now in looking back in retrospect, I'm beginning to think they do look different.....suddenly I don't see the 'frowning' I thought I saw in what I found....unless I posted the wrong one, but not likely.....

The material of Matt's reminds me of those disposable cafeteria trays that are pressed something papery. I notice the furrows between the eyes are painted on Matt's but molded in on the comparison jack. The comparison sample was made with a mold that has much more modeling on it than the mold for Matt's. We'll see what the UV test shows.

you have to be careful though, the inserts could be new but the piece itself is old:)

Just what I was in the middle of posting! It's an old pumpkin, with newer paper inserts. Thank you, cxgirl, you saved me some typing....

Good to know that contemporary replacements are sold. The one on the left in the last row is like Matt's.
