Is this an African basket?

    Is this African? Thanks for your time. It's about 11" high.

    Haha Any Jewelry thanks. So do you think this is the same? A Gambibgo basket made with elephant grass? Sure looks similar, but I just don't know!:wacky:

    Yes, this is definitely an African basket, made in the Bolgatanga area of northern Ghana.

    It's a twined basket, made from elephant grass, has the traditional type of start, uses the usual colors and weaving patterns associated with what have become known as "Bolga" baskets, although it lacks the distinctive double wrapped handle with little loops that usually immediately identify it as such.

    As you have probably discovered in searching the web, the weavers have recently been encouraged to expand the market, making new forms, including some different types of handles, and even baskets with no handles. But the materials, colors, weaving techniques and patterns still are basically the same.
