Could anyone confirm if this is a bullet shell? It's what I was once told it was. It has an inscription upon it which seems it had been presented to someone. Any information about this item would be great

Looks very similar to part of that perpetual calendar gadget recently seen, note the screw in primer.

OP, it is a good idea to write out the inscription, it is not very visible and is relevant.

Whatperpetual calendar gadget recently seen? Any links on this so I know what you are on about please.

Inscription reads `presented to mad pat by the mesopotamia temperance league bros: Harris: Morley: Speller: Gurley: at sheikh Saad.

Someone posted a mystery object made from such a shell base recently.

I'd certainly call it trench art.

I am sure the 'Temperance League' bit is a joke,

WWI 1916-18 artillery shell from the British campaign in Mesopotamia modern day Iraq against Turkey.

    Military collectors would buy this.

How interesting... So I take it from the inscription and what you have said the person who this was presented to would have been involved in the battle of sheik sa'ad?

Who knows, Mad Pat possiby got roaring drunk and captured the place single handed. Maybe that's why they called him Mad Pat.:)

Yes, the presenters were his buddies from the same regiment, done for a bit of a laugh, there would have been many empty shell casings lying around..

Interesting information thank you, I wouldn't know where or how to start researching so anymore links or information you may have or find would be great. I'm not sure if I would sell as it was owned by someone I recently lost. Out of curiosity how much do you think someone would pay for something like this?

Well considering as years ago when I first seen it I would have dismissed it as just another metal ornamental thing, slowly over the years it grew on me a bit more, and now I know for certain what it is and information about it then yest it definitely would be more than I thought!
Less than what I'd want? Anythings a bonus isn't it! Wouldn't sell it though, maybe in years to come but not yet

I'd pay $65. For that piece. Range I pay is $20-$500. But I've only ever found a couple of them where I had to pay over $400. I'm still kicking myself for not spending the $700. Firm price on a very large brass cartridge case done up with design in various contrasting metals, done by Muslim craftsmen in Egypt I think, most impressive Trench Art I've seen. Was just too much $ for me back 30 years ago.
