Help with the old Monk.

I need more information on this fellow. There is information on back but nothing comes up in a search. Can anyone help me?

The name looks like Bergmeister. I only found one painter named Bergmeister, who would have been 3 yrs old when this was painted.

Either a child prodigy, or maybe his father or another relative.

Thank you. I feel like the names on the back are misspelled. I believe it may have something to do with a French Roman Catholic Monk. ?

 

The monk is indeed Roman Catholic, he is a Franciscan monk.

 

The picture is painted on wood.

 

Lots of regular men in those days wore hooded cloaks like this so I'm not at all convinced it's a monk.

Also, a Bergomeister is a mayor. Perhaps it represented the mayor of a town on 1872. Pilt (?) seems to mean pilot. There's no G but I keep seeing "Loghengrin" in that first word.

 

I think you are confused with Bürgermeister, German for mayor. I have never seen regular men in the late 19th century looking like Franciscan monks. I don't think a mayor would have kept his job for very long looking like that, after all, a mayor has to look respectable. Here is a picture of a German gentleman who was mayor of Osnabrück until 1872.
