VERY DIFFERENT BOOK - BAPTIST??

Titled "Thoughts Upon Thought", hard or 'board' cover, 6" by 3-7/8", 129 pages, you can see decorative scrolling embossed on the front and back of the cover....1855 printer. Says "published by" but no specific author....some time ago I saw one sold on ebay for $35.00.....that's all I've got!!!!

 

Can't help with book itself, but I find it fascinating that the inscription says it was presented to a young lady by her father (since the title page says "For Young Men.")

The book may have been given to him as a Sunday School prize, and later he gave it to her.

 

If the father agreed with the premise(s) of the book perhaps it was given to the daughter to read and keep as an "educational resource" for the "qualities" she should remember and seek out in a husband.

it's nice when a dad gives his daughter a godly present...

 

Reading this sort of book used to be seen as a form of punishment for disobedient children.

 

For some children reading anything but the back of a Cheerios' box is punishment...................

 

HA HA, I did too...........but sometimes back in the early 1900's getting anything to read in the dull winters of Block Island.......could have been better than nothing........maybe.....I sure haven't read it....other than scanning it!!!

 

And if it was in a language you didn't read, you learned? I can think of worse ways to spend the Winter stuck in the middle of Nowhere.
