Hi, my hubby goes metal detecting when he went the other evening, he found this just laid on top of the soil, Is it possible to ID the age of it please?

Hello uksweetheart - It would help to know how large it is and to see a shot of it from the bottom. It looks like a fragment of larger piece.

Hi Don, it is 3" in height and it is filled in at the bottom.

Well that's interesting. Thank you for additional photo. I was not expecting it to be solid. It almost looks like some type of stone or composite. There are folks much more familiar with UK pottery than I am. Hopefully, they will be by soon and can help.

It is an interesting thiing. Maybe a fairing? Dollars to donuts, it was painted when new.

I'm not seeing any paint remnants. It's a tin glaze, probably 19th century, when a great deal of these little figurines were made. It may have had a touch of gilding. Probably a slightly religious theme.

Would tin glaze register on a metal detector? In my first post I said hubby found it laid on top of the soil so after your post about tin glaze we used a pin pointer over it and there was no sign of metal.

No, there's far too little metal in the mix and most will burn off in the firing.
