Recently I bought this box on flea market. It marked sterling but no other marks present.
Can someone date and point to a country of origin?
Enamel is in a very good condition and the whole scene looks very lovely.

With just the word sterling and nothing else, likely American. Pretty scene of Venice, I believe.

Use will depend on what the inside looks like and size (which you have not mentioned.)

What about the era. Is this something recently made or vintage?

I couldn't really tell you. Can you post pictures of the interior and the sterling mark, please? They might give a better idea.

Thanks. Saying "silver" after sterling, could point to non-US source. Like Japan, for instance. Does look more like a card case than cigarettes, with that metal clamp.

Stand by for other opinions on potential country of origin.

This is probably a 1920-30's era cigarette case.
As Bakersgma suggested, probably American made and a scene of Venice.
Too small usually for today's ciggies, but depending on size, many people are using these cases as business card holders.

the clamp held the smokes in place, otherwise you opened the case and woopsy....cigs all over the floor !

I was thinking that clamp looked to strong for that purpose. Wouldn't it squish the ciggies?

no...only a slight indentation.....and some clamps are looser than others.

True. And it's tough to tell how strong from a picture anyway.
