Value is impossible until a date and artist or subject can be determined .
And normally this is not a site for suggesting values, but we will try to point you in the right direction.

    Now.....try helping us....
    How big are they
what part of the country did you find them in
    were they bought at auction
are there any markings on the rear
could a signature be hiding under the frame.......these look so well done that not being signed......well to me that's strange.

That....& at present, they're pretty much worth what you paid for them !

& btw....how much did they cost you ?

Thank you for your reply. They are approximately 48"x32" and I bought them from an antique collector in the Miami area. They have been relined and restored so no markings on the back are visible. By the clothing, it seems 1860-1900 pieces to me and I felt in love with the quality of the paintings so I paid $3,000 a piece.

I think they are probably 1870-90 but maybe someone who knows clothing styles might know better. Not being signed and without provenance, they will be very hard to attribute. I agree that they are nicely done. However, without an attribution, I think you paid about what they are worth at retail. I imagine these would sell for less at auction.

I love them, they are some of the best done portraits I have seen from that period!:D

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I think the woman's clothing might be from the late 1870s or very early 1880s. I don't have time to look right now. Something to keep in mind is that older women often wore clothing that was slightly out of date. But hers looks very newly made to me.

    Instant ancestors. ;)

They certainly are wonderful portraits, but I would think it would be more important to know who they are than who painted them. What a shame that they left the family. :(

    Yes, it's a shame...but...it happens all too often...& that's how we get antiques ! :D

I have a wonderful painting of me as a child.
It hung in my parents bedroom.
It's now on the floor ...here....as I have no wish to hang it.
I have one daughter....in another country......whom I seriously doubt would ever want it.....& at 31 ...I doubt I will ever see grand children...

So....where will it end up......an auction ? an antique store ?.......
    the dump ?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

They ARE lovely portraits!!!! He seems to look a bit familiar, but it's just not ringing in................

Mom had a lovely portrait done of me at about 10....oval with "banana" curls......it was huge.....I too chose not to hang it.....my lovely older brothers had shot my eyes out with b-b guns too.....Mom wasn't too happy to have to get it repaired either!!!!:smuggrin::smuggrin: I finally let it go to auction after sitting in my cellar for too many years........

I certainly hope not! And don't give up on grandkids just yet. My son and his (now former) wife didn't decide on kids until they were 34.

its the beard which you are fimilair with. They all look the same. He does have a chin curtain beard. Maybe that helps to date it roughly. Also try national potrait gallery.

    Hi,
Mine will in up in the dump. Of the ten I have only one has an interest to a cousin. The rest only knows where they will end up. I guess I should write a short note and attach it to the painting of who it is. I gave a set of six painting to a cousin 20 years ago and her son sold them for drugs. I do not even have a photo of them anymore.:oops::oops::oops: The frames were British antiques I bought back in the 60s when I had them framed. I so rue the day I gave them away.

Just my opinion, but her clothing/hair looks mid to late 1860s to very early 1870s. I'm seeing more Ante-bellum than Gilded Age.
