I have this doll that was my grandma’s. My grandmother was born in 1897. The eyes move in her head. The hair was 00A31D9F-A6F6-42AA-9D78-E02D3194EB4E.jpeg 00A31D9F-A6F6-42AA-9D78-E02D3194EB4E.jpeg BD2FFDC8-216C-44DC-8321-DEEE1396879E.jpeg replaced in the late 70’s. She has one marking on her lower back side. Her limbs move with inner rope thread. What is her body made of or do you call? What is the value of her?
Thanks for any info on her!

    She has a composition body.
Does she have marks on the back of her neck or head?

Thank you! No marks on the back of her head or neck. Just the “Germany 4” mark.

I'm sorry - I thought you meant they were on the back of the neck.
    Thanks INH.

Hi Julie and WELCOME to ANTIQUERS!!! I'm not really much of a "doll" person, but just out of curiosity, and posing the question to the "Doll People" - should there be that much of a difference in color between the doll's face color and the body??? I know Julie said the hair was replaced in the 70's.....could the whole head have been??? OR is the difference normal???

(Difference is normal because the bod and head are made of different materials...my dollies are vinyl fashion dolls mostly but my uneducated opinion is that this is all original xx )

    Welcome, Julie.
I am not a doll expert by any means, but I can make just a few observations. Her head is made of unglazed porcelain, referred to as "bisque". There were many companies in the Thuringia region of Germany that made such dolls, many of which did not mark their work. They also made parts for each other. I would assume that the "Germany 4" mark on the body was just a size reference - made in Germany, to fit size 4 dolls.
Without the marking of a known company, it will make finding comparable dolls more of a challenge. And with the condition of chips in the body and replaced hair, your doll will not command the highest price. (We generally do not provide appraisals here, but we sometimes can help point to useful references.)
Was there any original clothing with her? Sometimes there may be markings on the clothing that might be helpful.

I am not a doll person either but seem to have had (and have) several old dolls that I've tried to research as well.

You mention that the hair was replaced. So many of these dolls had some sort of marking on the back of the neck or back lower head that I'm wondering if it may be covered by the new wig. Is it loose enough to peek under the in the back of the hair? The marks may be impressed and hard to see.

No when I received her there was not any clothing. Any appraisal references would be great! Thanks.

I don’t see any markings on her neck. Would they be on the back of her head? It is hard to see with the hair.

    Hi Julie!

    Welcome to Antiquers..............:cat:

Bou is correct that the color of head and body will not match, since they are of two different materials.

The body might also be made of wood. It's difficult to tell from your photo.

She has sleep eyes (move), with a jointed body.

I c/p the head into my photo program, and it looks as though the back of the head has cracks? Or is it strands of hair? (left side).

You can tell by holding a flashlight into the head to detect any cracks, and doll buyers do just that to be sure.

Lovely face, sleep eyes, open mouth.

Value is sketchy these days.......you might google to get an idea.

The replaced wig hurts a little, but many were replaced.

    @Christmasjoy will tell you more.

Thank you for the info! Her head is not cracked..... the wig was glued on. It is hair and glue you see in photo. Her body is not wood.

TY for your reply. Then the body is compo as Book suggested.

I have no idea if this is your doll. The face looks very similar and this one has Germany 4 also stamped on the body in red though it also has other markings. Body shape and mark seems similar.

EDIT: I swear when I posted this the second photo of the back of the head with the wig out of the way showing the markings wasn't showing for me. Maybe a glitch of some sort.
