I wonder if anyone recognizes the signature on this small sterling trinket box with theater masks on the cover? The piece is 1-1/4 inches in diameter and 1-1/2 inches high, weighing 57 grams. Impressed STERLING on underside at edge, with etched signature and possibly year. Thanks! ... Dave

Looks like "w'w" followed by "'93."

    Hi,
I think that was added by the owner.

Yes. Looks like it was done with something like a Dremel tool.

At that size, I would guess a pill box, but with those masks, you have to wonder what kind of pills.

Bet it was gifted to someone.

Thalia and Melpomene. I'd have bought that for my actress mama.

Thanks all for the comments. My colleague had some hope that it was a maker mark.

Believe the "WW '93" is most the maker's mark, but finding their identity will probably be difficult, could well be a student or amateur...

    Polish it.
Does a pen fit in the heads? Looks like they were meant to hold something.

I think so too. If someone was going to mark it with a personal id, I would expect a name, or maybe a ss no / driver's license number. The object seems too basic for an end-owner to bother marking.

Interesting thought -- yes indeed, my Bic pen fit without a problem with a bit of room to spare. I wondered why the mask decoration was there, as it makes it difficult to carry in a pocket. Makes more sense if it was on a desk with a practical application for the masks.
