Featured Tapestry Question

This tapestry was bought by my now deceased parents back in the 70's when we lived in Europe, I was in my teens at the time. I remember my parents let a friend at a University in England evaluate and age it, he determined it was approx 300 years old. It has some flaws due to its age, some of the silk in the wings has fallen off and some small places along the edge, but overall still quite beautiful. I do not remember if it was Japanese or Chinese, any way to determine which? Thank you.

Cranes. It would be Japanese. But are you sure its a tapestry? A tapestry is woven. Yours appears to be an embroidered panel trimmed in brocade.

Here's one for comparison. Meiji period which is roughly Victorian. The similar panels I find on the internet are all identified as being from the same period.

The bird is the red-crowned crane. Looks like yours have some fading.

No a problem re mis-identifying. No one can be expected to know everything. And welcome to the forum. If you do a Google Images search for "Meiji embroidered silk panel" other examples will come up.

Welcome, Rodney. That is an absolutely beautiful embroidered Japanese panel.

Agree, a Japanese Edo period silk embroidery of cranes, with a silk brocade surround.

This panel is much older than Meiji period, which is relatively recent, 1868-1912. This one is much more 'alive', for lack of a better word, than Meiji period embroidery.
It is definitely Edo period, 1603-1868. I would say at least 18th century, possibly slightly older.

It might be worth checking in to replacing the glass with "conservation glass ". That will keep light from causing further fading. Warning it is not cheap like regular picture framing glass but will be well worth the cost by keeping the embroidery in its present state. Google "conservation glass" to learn more. BTW: there is also "Museum glass".

 

Someone else recommended the same glass. I had some business people visiting from Canada last year, one brought his wife who is a Antiques Broker and I showed it to her, she made the same recommendation. Now she calls about every two months trying to get me to sell it.

I was also hoping I could also get some help on this chair. How old is it and is it Chinese or Japanese? I will say its the most uncomfortable chair ever made, the seat is wide and totally flat, and when you lean back the design digs into to your back. Not sure if it was even meant to be used as a chair lol. Did the holes going through the the arm rests have a purpose? Thanks. Rodney

 

Too much heavily ornated to be Japanese and rather crude carving--------> Chinese not very old, I think 20th
Anyway, a conversation piece for sure!
