    I am utterly depressed.
Don't touch it! Put it back in the ground and dig it up in 500 yrs.

Please.. take it to a professional. Record the location, report the find, turn it in and take a class in civic archeology.

I agree, please take it to the local museum. You won't be able to do anything with it now. But at least the local museum may be able to track down it's history. Please give them photos of the original state as well.
These rings were quite common in most of Europe, but in parts of Bavaria there were restrictions on who was allowed to wear jewellery.

It looks more like iron to me. Can't decipher the device, but it looks, to me, most like something coherent this way up:

Okay...then dig up and destroy items at will... you wont find many here willing to help you I'm afraid.

Staying out of this. What's done is done. Branvan, even if you are not interested in the academic/historical value, it will enhance what it can be sold for if you can provide the buyer with the provenance. How found, when, where, including depth, any other info about location, etc. It's in your self interest to document it as thoroughly as you can & preserve the record.

I can see Aaron's horse, I can't see your knight. Which way up is the right way up?
