Just to be clear, I know a lot of people call something like this "plein aire" but it's technically not. En plein air (French pronunciation: [ɑ̃ plɛn ɛːʁ]), or plein air painting, is a phrase borrowed from the French equivalent meaning "open (in full) air". It is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors. There are a lot of plein aire painters here where I live because it's so beautiful. Since you have no way of knowing if the artist was actually outdoors when he/she painted this, you should rightly call it a desert landscape.

It looks it was done outside, right off the side of the road.

Many artists, including myself, work from photographs that we took by the side of the road.

As I'm sure you've found, Jean Ashbrook worked from Palm Springs. Perhaps you'll be able to identify scene. Coachella Valley or beyond.
