Served on a Silver Platter?

Hello there, I'm new to this forum so forgive me if I violate any rules or etiquette or anything. I am not necessarily new to the world of collecting/antiques and whatnot, but I'm very far from especially knowledgeable as well. Anyway, I happened upon a plate/dish that after a reasonable amount of research I'm 95% certain is silver plated, and therefore essentially a worthless trinket. However, I thought I would seek out a second opinion, and maybe I could learn a bit more. Even if the piece is worthless, it still might be an interesting find because it seems to have been etched, rather than engraved with some sort of identifying marks, one of which says a date, which I read as 1901 and the other a proper noun, which is difficult to read. It is in classic 'Old English' typeface and it seems to say something like 'The Pide....' Can anyone help with this in terms of authentication or history?

Greetings, Joe! This is certainly a challenge. You are probably right about it being silver plated (certainly not solid silver of any degree), but seeing a picture of the full item, both front and back would be helpful.

I see what you mean about at least the second pic showing what appears to be "etched" words. I am not at all sure what the remnants shown in the first pic say if anything. It may be what is left of a sticker type label.

So, according to what I was able to discern, especially by inverting the image with the etching & playing with contrast & brightness, it looks like it says "The Piders" in Old English text.....which if I'm not being spoofed, looks like a family name, according to Google and what came up on Ancestry.com:
    https://www.ancestry.com/name-origin?surname=pider

MY image is below.....You can also see in the 'blue' (inverted) image...that in the word "The" the person doing the etching made an error with a capital 'E' but then corrected it....just a side comment....AT LEAST, that's what I came up with!!:rolleyes::rolleyes: BTW, my images aren't great, but then neither was what I had to work with...thru no fault on anyone's part!!! I also forgot to WELCOME you to the site, SO, WELCOME to ANTIQUERS, Joe!!!! Nice to have you on board!!!

I haven't got a better idea than The Pide... but I sincerely doubt this was a specific family's item. Personalization or monogramming is not normally done in this "acid-etched" method. More likely for a restaurant. Like I said earlier, a picture of the actual item could help determine.

There's no ruling out it couldn't be a restaurant platter or something like that....would be nice to see the WHOLE item, that's for sure!!!

Aha! Thank you for all the replies and for welcoming me. I've attached a photo of the whole item that you all have been asking for. Once again, thank you all for being so great and helpful! Also, sorry for the quality, uploads have a size limit of 1mb, which is difficult to achieve. I had to try several methods to reduce the file size to get the whole item in the frame while also being able to upload. Anyway, thanks again!

Joe, thank you for the full image....could very well be from a restaurant or an Inn even....just can't tell with not much else to go on.

The other thing I wanted to mention was that there are several FREE Image Size Reducing APPs to help you get your images consistently UNDER 1 MB. One of which is named "Photoshop Express"...but, this one takes some getting used to...you'd want to play with it a bit!!! However, here are several links to the suggestions/directions ON THIS SITE to also reduce your images, whether using computer, iPhone or Android phone... hope this helps you out!!!

You are allowed up to 10 images per post!!! Here are some links to the instructions:

    If on the computer:

    If on an iPhone:

Oh yeah, and here's the back. Again, sorry for the quality (what's with the file size limit, am I missing something?). The piece is about a foot in diameter, and maybe an inch deep.

Not exactly the same but very similar. Silverplated, at the thrift stores around here very cheap and still hard to get rid of, I'm afraid. Looks like an underplate.

Joe, I have a silver plated dish exactly like that. It is more a dish than salver. If I can find a picture, I'll post it.

It's "possible" but too short - if it did start life as Piedmont, the mont part was either badly done to begin with or got worn off somehow.

Hello. You need more and better pictures- an overall image of the platter, detail images of any decoration and a clear, well-lit picture of the mark.

An important element missing from the pictures is proper lighting.
