Is this a matchbox holder??

Hello. My husband has had this piece for along time now and we just recently brought it out of storage. He isn't quite sure what it is either. We are thinking possibly a matchbox holder but would love some advice. There is a stamp on the "matchbox" part. It has a
"Coronet trademark, which is a stamp of a crown inside a laurel wreath. Above the crown is written "Trademark" and below the Crown "Coronet." This trademark was registered to Geo. Borgfeldt & Co., a major U.S. importer located in New York City".

As shown in the photos there is a thin wire that goes inside. I'm not sure if his head was supposed to bobble or not but due to the age of the piece it has worn a hole near the leg on the stomach and the wire pops out of the hole so the head doesn't stay attached.

 

It's very narrow. Perhaps it was meant to hold a perpetual calendar.

Your piece looks very solid. This one is made of a thin metal or possibly tin and didn't come with any calendar attachments. I guess that they could've been lost over the years. Thanks for the option.

Doubt it is tin,most likely steel try a magnet on the piece.

 

The dog part looks like hollow lead to me..

 

He's made of pot metal/spelter. Most likely was not meant to come apart.
He was a calendar.
Most likely imported from Japan. Japan made a lot of those silly dog face animals.
Made before WWII. 1920s/30s probably - at least that would be my guess.

So for future reference. When you get duplicate pictures, there will be an Edit button available for a while. Click Edit, More Options. Next to the pictures will be a Delete button, Save. You will be able to remove duplicate pictures.
