    Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

    Even the NAME of it sounds SO BIZARRE!!!! However I have ONE that I guess my Dad had saved in an old tobacco can with a bunch of other old silver coins. But can anyone answer WHY on earth they would even MAKE such a thing and then name it like that??? It LOOKS like an early dime did........mine's not in the best of shape and I didn't dare clean it as I wasn't sure WHAT to clean it with (suggestions??)......and unless it was PROOF....I don't believe it has much value at all. Oh, and NO indentations on the edges either!! BUT, it IS fun to have.....for its namesake if for nothing else:joyful::joyful::joyful::joyful::joyful:!!!

    Well because they are made from 25% nickel. Before (1851-1873) they were called 3 cent silvers as they were minted on 75% silver planchets.
    In that condition it may fetch 15-20$ on Ebay. The US Mint stopped minting the nickle 3 cent pieces in 1889.

    At the time, a US five cent coin was a half dime and made of 90% silver.

    Hi,
    The first house I bought in Jersey (Merchantville). After a rainstorm I was walking up the walk and spotted something shiny. Bent down and picked up a silver three cent piece. I never saw one before. Stuck it in my shirt pocket and forgot about it.
    Never saw it again.:oops::oops::oops::oops::oops::oops:

    Do not clean coins.

    The three cent denomination sounds odd because for your entire life the word nickel in connection with coins, has been the same as 5 cents. It's engrained in your psyche. It's not at all odd to me because I have no built in nickel meaning, I know it is a US 5 cent coin, but I also know there were silver 5 cents, and other oddities. Just part of the rich landscape of coin collecting, same way the $2.50 US broken bank note is not specially odd for being a fractional amount. Most people woulf find a $2.50 note pretty odd. I know that the regular US $2 bill is regarded with suspicion by the US young.

    The thing I have stuck in my head is that a pound is worth something, despite the value being so trivial nowadays.

    I agree.
    US also had Two Cent coins from 1864-1873 and Twenty Cent coins from 1875-1878

    Hi,
    Because you never see them in circulation. My step father used them when he went to the race track. The bets were two bucks so he would use 2 dollar bills. I remember last year handing a young clerk two Susan B Anthony silver dollars. She asked what they were and if they were legal? Kids just were not used to such things.

    Cause younger people don't care what's going on around them - they are too busy staring at their damn phones and texting.

    But if you can find someone to take these new dollars, maybe you can unload your gas station tokens at a buck each too.

    Not to confuse but it's actual numismatic terminology is "nickle 3 cent piece" - whew, that was hard to type let alone think of!:nailbiting:

    Just for the heck of it I took a few pics of some 2$ bills I have collected over the years. Sorry they are a touch blurry as I wasn't going to pull them out of their sleeve pages.
