I'm new to this forum but not to antiques. I grew up in Connecticut, and as a child was surrounded by antiques that had come through my family. Now that my mother has died and my father is in memory care I have a number of family pieces in our home. I can honestly say that I grew up in antique shops, where my father would take my brothers and me on Saturdays. I am currently making a court cupboard in the style of a late 17th century cupboard that will replace the plug ugly buffet that came with the house. I enjoy old paintings, furniture, tools, chess sets, and pretty much anything else 19th century or earlier.

Oh my goodness, I have just spent 15 or so minutes reading about the descriptive term "plug ugly." It's an "interesting" phrase (especially its "connection" to early firefighters/firefighting). ;)

    Welcome aboard, Craiglcowing.

    Welcome!

Someone recently posted a (replica?) court cupboard here for identification. I find it amusing because my family had one that came from Essex to the US in the early 1600s....................and in the 1960s weren't even able to GIVE it away..................we finally found a museum that would take it, but if I remember correctly WE had to pay the freight to get it out of the house......................glad to see a resurgence in interest, but its about half a century too late for me!

Now these regularly go for upwards of $20,000. Victorian furniture went through the same cycle. When I was a kid in the 60's you couldn't give it away. Now Victorian furniture often gets top dollar in antique shops.
