Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Looks like there is a photographer's imprint on that. What does it say? Does it help at all?

This photo is probably from the first decade of the 20th century, based on hairstyles and the card mount.

My grandfather grew up on a rather impressive estate. (No, his family was NOT wealthy. His father, my great grandfather, was the head caretaker.)

This was in the very early 1900's. Here's a 1909 shot of the main house on the estate (very "nouveau riche" if you ask me!)

1909 Luttgen estate Villa Linta, main house, Redding CT.jpg

The main house burned down in the late 1930's, and the whole estate (almost 1000 acres) is now a state park.

In any case, I happened to come across a couple of photos of that very same estate on an historical society site online, and I was able to track down the person who posted them. We've been in touch now, with several back-and-forth exchanges, for a few days, and it's been so exciting to share info. (HIS family lived there after my grandfather's father died in 1922, and the rest of the family was forced to leave.)

As it turns out, I have more than 60 photos of the house & grounds, as well as some rather nice things that the owner gave to my great-grandfather while he was working there.

    Pretty cool, huh?

You have to have a lot of money to employ a person just to care of only the heads....

It's great that you have those photos, and the family history. And to find that other person with the connection is a bonus!

This is my favorite youth picture of my father....born in 1917.....he's what, maybe 4.....guess Mom liked it too.....she had just his head etched onto a small gold medallion that she wore all the time....she got to take it with her on her final journey "Home".....

I have another old photo from Block Island by (I think judging by what's signed on the photo) a Billy or William Woodhead....found very little on him except that if it IS by him he was a photographer, born in 1869. Anyhoos, it's kind of a classic of a fisherman mending his nets....with what looks to be a corncob pipe in his mouth!!! Note he's using a fid!! My guess is it was taken before 1920s......

@Bev aka thelmasstuff ....now I can't find the scant info I had on him (Wm H Woodhead).....and I may have lost it completely.....a while back my computer died.....got a new one, but in my techies migrating what they could from the old hard drive to the new SSD drive, they said I lost some stuff.....WHAT "stuff" that was I'm still finding out!!!! But will keep looking, 'cuz THAT kind of info I do NOT like to lose!!!! And I don't 'back-up' like I'm supposed to.....now THAT should teach me a lesson..... :(

If you still have the old hard drive you can access it with ones of these.

They're rather cheap online. Plug your old drive into it and connect to USB port. I have been able to pull up old files from a 1990s computer. Even if the operating system on it is corrupt, the other files are still there.

Poor photo of mine. They don't come with the dust.

Small and light. Should be under $25 with shipping. Can read many older styles of memory cards too.

My latest find... I have a 'thing' for theatrical images at the moment! I was hoping to trace the actor on this cabinet card but haven't been successful yet. On the back is written 'With best wishes to Bella, from Cheesie, Belfast Sep 30/85' {1885}. Photographer is J. Deane Hilton, 443 West Strand {London}. theatrical cabinet card642.jpg

This is great! I have a lot of theatrical images but don't know who this fellow is. Despite the fading I love this pose, and the inscription.

As we 'progress' 'forward'...fewer and fewer people will be able to read such things....and then less help here. :p

THAT is SO NEAT!!!!!!! I don't know if you saw this tome about Actors and Actresses of the 1880s or not.....no pictures, but there might be some info in it.......I just do NOT have the patience to cruise through something like this:

    https://books.google.com/books?id=jm0BAAAAQAAJ&pg=PA65&lpg=PA65&dq=Bruce+Edgar,+British+actor&source=bl&ots=I-FD5DeOr0&sig=fO_l3sUzVEExoQgTRF8afc_5awU&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj9qdSb4sTSAhVM4YMKHYCKAncQ6AEIQzAN#v=onepage&q=Bruce Edgar, British actor&f=false

By the way, scroll back up to the top to start back at the beginning.....I came across an actor of the times (Bruce Edgar) on another site, but the picture doesn't match yours at all!!! That's why this site starts at him......

Only because my family has a connection to Block Island - one of my ancestors was one of the 12 original settlers. :)
