Hello. Is someone able to help me identify the chair in the pic. Bought it at auction because I liked it but interested to know more please. Thank you.

All I can really tell you is that it is likely European in origin. Probably late 19th century to early 20th. My best guess would be Italian.

Thank you @verybrad. That's really interesting. Will do a bit more research in that direction then.

Thanks @komokwa. I don't doubt Brad's response. I am hoping to get a type / name of the chair so I can try to get more history on the chair..Also perhaps a value.

Looks like it has its original leather upholstery.

I will expound on my reply a bit since you are not getting any further input. Your chair is not typical here in the US but is a type I have seen before occasionally. I don't know of any historical precedence for it which is why I really don't know what else to say about it. Some of the details are French but it just doesn't scream French to me.The chair seat is stretched Spanish leather but it doesn't look particularly Spanish to me. Italy is known for producing chairs using French details and a lot of chairs were imported from Italy in the 20th century. This is why I thought it might be Italian. It could just as well be Eastern European as some odd-ball pieces come from there as well. Something about that rounded back says Dutch to me but I don't see anything else indicating it might be Dutch in origin and would discount that idea out of hand. The carving is not the highest quality and the styling is such that the idea came to me that it could be colonial in origin but the wood doesn't seem to fit with that idea. The wood appears to be beech or similar fairly non-descript wood and that would fit with it being European in origin. It does seem to have some age to it but it is difficult to tell much from a single picture. Perhaps some more pictures would provide more clues to go on.

It certainly does seem that way Debora, has good wear but no tears at all. Needs a bit of repair work underneath with the 'padding' of the seat.

Thanks again @verybrad. Seems like a Hinds 57 as my husband would say. I will post more pics perhaps of the wood detail, leather, underside and back. As you can see we have extremely limited knowledge in the antiques field but it really interests us and would like to get more involved. We love to watch collectors / pickers shows on TV like American Pickers and always enjoy visiting antique stores and have just started going to auctions. Gotta start somewhere. I really appreciate your help. Oh and we are in the UK.

Does appear to have damage to the splat.

I don't really see anything here to contradict what I said before other than the new pics show more grain to the wood than previously. Could be ash or hickory which is still fitting with the European origin. Since you are in the UK, it would make it a bit more likely to be colonial in origin than if you were here in the US. Still not sure that the wood would fit. Maybe from India could work but probably not from a more tropical locale. With your Elvis avatar, I assumed you were here.

Thanks @verybrad . I appreciate your thoughts & hope to put a few more things on the forum soon. I said to my husband that Elvis helped with that assumption. I've been a fan as long as I can remember!

I doubt it's Colonial, as brad says, wrong wood. That webbing looks awfully English to me, as does the colour of the leather and the studding. The legs are odd though. Can you get a photo of its feet please? Looks rather like a club chair.

Ah. Porcelain castors in brass, thought they were. I do actually think this came from the country you bought it in - ours. ;) A gentleman's chair, sometimes known as a club chair, because that's where you often found them. Beech or elm, from about, oh, 1870s or 80s.
