Sorry, no idea why that didn't work. Here is a screenshot

A very dear English friend I will probably never meet. She knows about Schmoll because I told her & she told me she planned to use the info in the listing. I thought of her first thing when you said you had seen it on eBay, but a search on eBay US had no listings for her. I owe her an e-mail. One of many overdue, I'm ashamed to admit.

The signature from that listing for anyone else following this.

I can't find this as either an active or a completed listing. Can you get a photo of the face of the cameo comparable to the one of the back? I don't seem to have it in my 'collection'.

This is her Ruby Lane shop: https://www.rubylane.com/shop/nectarjewels

Odd that it's popped up on German eBay too?. Presume that's German anyway!. If I do a search on eBay UK it's not there, it's only visible through a google search:confused:. I wonder if she needs to check her listing if as you say she is in the UK?.

Thanks for the pix. I don't get it. I checked eBay US, UK & DE for listings under her seller name & got no current listings. Did find a couple of listings when completed listings requested but not this one. It's not in her Ruby Lane shop.

Aha! Just took a careful look at your screenshot. That is eBay AT - Austria. But when I go there I get the same results as with others: nothing current; a couple that have expired but not Orpheus. Didn't someone just post a question/observation about how far back completed listings were showing?

So, thanks again. I couldn't have done it on my own. :)

Why would it be listed on Austrian EBay if she's in the UK?. Maybe a good reason for that email to her :)

Sellers who are willing to ship internationally & have this sort of thing to sell - fairly pricey & limited market - will list on eBay sites in additional countries beyond the one where they live. I don't think she has any problem here, just the mystery of why a Google search can connect you to an expired listing that eBay itself won't show you.

Another mystery is why Google does not produce the Orpheus listing for me.

Meanwhile, Oh Good Grief! I couldn't find this on the linked page:

Charles Schmoll had a family shop of goods where (if you bought items over a certain amount) you would be gifted a cameo carved by him as a “free gift with .

but there's my joke about Schmoll cameos being so ubiquitous, I suspect he gave them away free with purchases over a certain amount turned into Instagram/Internet fact. I don't much mind when people crib from me, but I wish that, when they do, they would be accurate.

    Found it:

Yikes! That's how it happens, though. :greyalien::writer::)

I remember reading about how misinformation gets perpetuated in science textbooks & an example of how Aristotle had written that women have fewer teeth than men & it wasn't until modern times anyone thought to count.

At least this pseudo-factoid is pretty harmless. Maybe other readers will find it of questionable veracity. Or maybe my joke was the truth!

    Hello Everyone,

Its been a crazy few weeks. Today this cameo arrived and it seemed unusual enough to share here and ask the resident experts their opinions. I think it could be a portrait of someone who existed vs a fanciful image but you will be a better judge of that. I know it’s shell, 800 silver and nothing else. The back has a signature. Yes, a portrait, & for once I'm not creeped out by the teeth. Face is very well executed. Think there was some fancy applied: looks like artisan gave her either pearls in her hair or a high starched lace collar, like one of those hardstone noblewoman pieces so popular at the turn of the last century.

I feel I should know the signature, 20th century cutter, but not coming to me. Nothing on the partial list I have connected. Nice piece! :)

Yep, my first impression was this is the first one I have seen where the teeth are well done and not creepy! Very nicely carved!

@Bronwen how is BMRT's cameo signature done? It doesn't look like the typical scratching.

Acid etched, with better control than you see most of the time. Typically comes out so blobby you can see it is intentional but not much more.

What time span was that done?

I can only make a vague guess at it. Not before 20th century as far as I can tell. People like Giovanni Noto were still scratching their name in in the first part of the century. At the risk of having this turn up elsewhere on the Internet as confirmed fact, I'd say 1930s - present.
