I got the new Samsung 7, the salesperson raved about the camera, it has its perks, but taking closeup shots is not one of them.... I think my Samsung 4 was better at that....playing with it, but the reviews are not stellar.

Oh well, Karma has been good to me in other ways. I was out and about this weekend, and the finds were in the antique malls.

Firstly, some strange bi-color foil-backed stones in these earrings, peacockish


Then this pink conch cameo.... I have researched pink conch, seems it is on the endangered list, so I will be picking these up (like I already do, duh)
See how the frame in the pic is a bit fuzzy? The camera seems to focus in on one central area....


Then there was a story with this. My friend for the last three decades became an antique dealer. Outside his mall, there was a display case with just one earring in it, so I asked him where the other one was. He said he was keeping the one earring in the display case OUTSIDE of the mall so he could remember to find the other one, which he did- D & E Julianna heliotrope watermelon earrings (again, I see the camera focusing on the central stones....)


Then my prize for the weekend.... I am in another antique mall that never seems to make a mistake, but I was in the area. I find a section by accident I almost missed with some junky stuff, and lo and behold, for a whopping $12, I find these:


I am thinking these are saphiret, not sapphirine, because of the richness of the mocha.... probably old-stock stones used with the newer aurora borealis stones. I wouldn't let go of them, the salesperson wanted to take them after she looked at them, and I said I would follow her to the cash register and pay immediately.

I had some other good finds, but need to photograph them (some even non-jewelry.)

 

Score! Sapphiret for sure. I'd call the first set Kreol or Cuba stones but I'm probably a bit off.

 

Thanks, evelyb... the name escaped me, I do believe you are right about them being Cuba stones!!!

 

Maybe there are adjustments in 'camera settings' or some such place?

I have an S7 - I find that if I switch to pro mode instead of auto mode - I can focus and adjust exposure better for really close up shots. I seem to get pretty good results that way.

 

I've accepted $US1000 for the cat -- a fair bit less than the 8200 pound auction record but what seems to be a very decent offer from an expert on these strange creatures. Happy days.

Went to the Winter antique show that is run by the folks that have our big outdoor market in the Summer. It is not nearly as large but it was such a great day they sold some outdoor sites besides all their indoor spaces. I didn't have great expectations so didn't get there until around 11:00 AM. Even so, I found a couple things. I didn't get pics taken so these are of identical items borrowed from the internet.

This pair of modernist .835 Wilkens candlesticks were marked as plate and bought for $8.00. They bear proper German hallmarks.



This Haeger Earthwrap bowl was marked as "Indian? pottery" despite bearing a faint Royal Haeger mark on felt bottom. Bought for $6.00.



There were some other things I wouldn't have minded buying but they weren't bargains. I always find it interesting to see that so-called professional dealers get things so wrong. I find it even stranger that after 3 hours of being open and hundreds of customers passing through, that there are still sleepers such as the above to be found.
