Antique rocker - any information welcome

  1. Okay my antique furniture rockstars.... what does everyone think of this antique rocker. It was purchased here in Oregon. This is what we have described it as....

This spectacular rocker features a carved eagle with stars & shield in the front, griffin head arms, and dolphin head rungs with fish scales all over. It has been reupholstered and has a tufted back. Overall it measures 45" tall x 29" wide x 40" deep.

    But any expansion, or more details? Date estimate? IMG_3097.jpg IMG_3098.jpg IMG_3099.jpg IMG_3100.jpg IMG_3101.jpg IMG_3102.jpg IMG_3103.jpg

With all those patriotic motifs, I think it's pretty obvious it was made in Taiwan, don't you agree?:hilarious:

Blooey may have a point here. There ARE some patriotic motifs, i.e. the eagle, shield with 13 (colonial) stars, and I could see that the griffin heads could just as easily be "don't tread on me" snakes. :) The dolphin rockers....not so much. The stain has darkened, but I'd guess it's walnut.

Could easily be a "themed" rocker to commemorate the U.S. centennial in 1876. Unusual, and I would think it would bring more $ than most, but as you know rockers are almost at the "give away" level, including two perfectly nice Eastlake rockers that I recently tried to sell for $20 each, and ended up literally giving away.

American, 1876, walnut, probably made for the centennial, excellent quality item. Hard to ascertain worth, since it appears to be one of a kind. Around here would expect to see it go for $300-$500 at auction.

$300-500 ain't bad for a rocker, the new covering looks well done.

That price is about as good as a rocker gets these days!

    Quite a remarkable piece.
