Found this pair of spats and I am trying to find info on them. First is the time period they are from. All of the pairs I am finding are either canvas or leather. This pair is made of both. There are tags inside marked Fraternal Outfitters REMSCO ?? NY. Wondering if anyone might have any info on these as I cannot find another pair like them.
These were made for certain fraternal organizations, it seems. They are not regulation uniform leggings for any US military service, as far as I know. The labeling is not correct for 20th C. Military or GSA-contract items. The phrase "U.S.Army Style" is a give-away that these were made for the civilian market. I know nothing about the maker.
That label doesn't make any sense as to address. It looks like the bottom line says: GB or GR 28. Roadway, NY There doesn't seem to be a town/city in NY with the name of Roadway. The GB or GR doesn't mean anything either. The 28 may be Route 28 in New York but what in the world does GB or GR mean??? The rest of the label reads: Fraternal Outfitters SEMSCO I was hoping to ID the fraternal regalia supply company. From there might have been able to ID a definite timeframe. I didn't explain my point very well, so here's another try and some additional info. The leggings shown by OP are not military, but are similar to official cavalry-style military leggings like these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-WW...ther-Lined-Mounted-Leggings-NOS-/252628480494 They are for civilian use, probably equestrian, but who knows. I've never seen nor can I now find any military contract leggings made by Gemsco, but they could have made them. The marking format is not military contract type marking. Here are some examples of official military legging markings, you can find many more by searching Eboo for something like "leggings WWII."
Good point! I never said they were authentic military contract .......I just found the company that made them. To me....Regulation US Army....is the give away....that these were not made FOR the US Army , but are correct in every detail to those that were....xcept for having no contract number. Now as to date ....as the OP has asked......I have no good answer for that.
Hubby has a closet full of uniforms (and a packed seabag just in case, you know, aliens attack and they decide they need to call up a 70 year old retired Seabee Yeoman.) Military items are stamped thusly, "Coat, Navy, Wool" etc.
