They are worth what you paid for them.

I can`t help with the artist, but close ups are needed to see the subjects..

The guy on the right seems to be wearing military dress wear for a function or special occassion so its hard to see rank or regiment.

The lady has a look of Florence Nightingale

In the position the pictures are in, I can't see them well enough to try to ID. The perspective is wrong. A straight eye level view of them is needed. We are looking at them from the bottom of the frame up. If pics are lying flat down on a surface, a picture of them needs to be taken looking straight down on top of them. The best way to photograph a picture is to have the picture, framed art or whatever sitting straight up then it easier to get a straight on view of the subject. I took the liberty of editing your pic using the perspective tool in one of my image editing program. I then cropped to the individual pics and zoomed in on them. It did help, but didn't help me to ID the individuals. I have included my edits. Possibly someone else can ID them. Love to know what that white whatever on the right side of the soldier pic is. Looks like it is about to stab him or has tried to stab him and missed.

    Susan,
I believe that is light reflection on the glass.

Ahhh, thank you, Davey. Have now looked around at photographs by Mayall. He certainly was involved with the rich and famous. The woman appears to me not be a royal of the house of QVic for she doesn't have the jowls/full cheeks that are evident on QVic and her brood. Also she may have a hint of a smile that probably would rule out royalty. All the pics I've seen of the royals at that time in history, went to great lengths to display stern faces. Though at that time picture taking was serious business (important day in ones life and a long laborious task) resulting in very very few photos of smiling people.

I looked at a few famous British women authors/poets finding none similar to this woman:
Doesn't look like any of the Bronte sisters accept a slight possibility of Charlotte.
Jane Austen, too early for this era photograph.
Doesn't look like George Eliot (Mary Evans).
    Doesn't look like Jean Ingelow.
Can't find an early pic of Anna H. Leonowens of Anna & the King of Siam fame.

That's it, I shot my wade.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

What are the sizes of the images? The framing is such that I can't tell. Are the backs completely sealed? Do you know whether they are mounted on cards, or unmounted?

I can't identify either of them, but I expect they are both known.

The gentleman looks like he's wearing more of a Salvation Army dress uniform or a band uniform than military dress. The lady is ... a lady.

Since Mayall traveled to the USA, maybe try Louisa May Alcott?

Maybe you could wait until you have the items in hand, thus giving you a better opportunity to engage in any discussion that could arise where questions relevant to the items need swifter replies....

    Just a though....;)

She is in the United States and was referring to 2 cities with the same names in Massachusetts and New Hampshire in the United States.

I hope you are having a better day now. I'm sure that nobody was saying you are lying. I've enjoyed looking at these photos, and I hope that you are able to get them soon.
