I garbage picked these 2 chairs last year and finally got them down from the barn attic. The feet were cut off smooth, don't know if it that was the way it's supposed to be but I started to add to the balls and claws. Question is - what is a good wood filler for the separation gaps between the joints, the structure is very sturdy so being in the Barn attic must have really dried out the wood as it gets hot up there in the summer. I plan on using the Minwax Urethane with stain, a darker color to cover over the filled in gaps of the wood.
First 3 pics are from the chair I haven't done much to except add to the balls, the rest are from the chair I sanded and added the claws.........

Wow Rayo, I just wanted to say - you've done a beautiful job with the feet. I don't know the best material to use for flat cracks anymore. I don't think any material will fill that back crack and never fall out, sawdust and Elmer's wood glue is probably not a permanent fix to something like this that will move slightly with wear as the chair is used.

How pliable is the wood flour glue that is mixed with sawdust and used to fill cracks on floors? It gets sunk in with polyurethane after the finish sanding and it wears well for the first few years, but I'm not sure how long it can last? I sold every house I ever refinished the floors in.

Problem with water based wood glue or white glue is it fills the wood pores preventing anything like urethane from adhereing to it! It peels right off.

I've only used Elmer's as a structural fix, but wood flour paste with sawdust never peeled up.

But the horizontal surface of a floor is much different than that of the vertical surface of the chair.

Wonderful work. This is my go to stuff. I found it when dealing with the wood damage to my 109 year old house. It's horribly expensive, but very easy to work with.

On antique furniture I've used hard wax mixed with pigment to fill voids, in combination with padding lacquer or french polish/shellac type finishes - should be OK with urethane I suppose, but just guessing as I have no experience with modern finishes.

Never tried it but hide glue with fine sawdust?

I have used the two part epoxy filler made by Minwax that I'm guessing is like WoodEpox. I think it's paint-able but not very stain-able as I recall.

I use gel stain and it works great. Gel stain is more like paint than regular stain, so you may want to try a test area first. I'd hate to see you use it and the repairs be visible.
