Not in Ohio - ground is frozen solid - then comes the thaw and pure mud!! I had to chip the duck poop ice out of their coop to fill it with new straw and now the next few days are going to be 50 degrees - more mud coop! UGH!

Nobody likes going into the snow!!

How big a space is it?
    Can you reduce it some?
How about elevating at least a part of it 6" or so?
If it won't support itself use stakes or rebar to set a course of cinder block and fill it and them in, perhaps with an inch or two of gravel for a base.
Maybe carry that out for the blocks to rest on.

May work out simply ducky. ;)

Damn, It's a wood coop 12 foot by 6 foot and 4 foot tall WITH wiring for lights and heat lamps. When you get to be close to 60 ya ain't doing that kind of lifting - LOL!! They are lucky I can still move to clean them out!! :cigar:

I tought you wanted something outside for them that would drain.

I built up their dirt instead of breaking my back trying to put in drainage.
Plus the coop and the pen are built into each other. 000_6129.jpg

Way back when, one of our tenant farmers on Long Island raised (the famed and tasty) Long Island Ducklings.............and he charged us for the goop he cleaned out of the coops for Grandmama's rose garden. You could smell him coming from the street...........

Great post, Joshua! Once or twice in the past, I have referenced 'my mom and I' when talking about us going to Garage Sales and our love of bottle digging. We also tried our hand at metal detecting, albeit we weren't great. We did get lucky a few times and find some old coins - late 1800's Indian Head pennies (I think I have them and kept them aside - I will check, it has been 20+ years) and a silver quarter. I don't believe we ever found jewelry. We found more jewelry in the bottle dumps :joyful: Do you watch 'The Curse of Oak Island' TV Show? On one of the most recent episodes they had a celebrated metal detector 'expert' who has found over $1 million (value) in his lifetime and he is fairly young. Good for him. It was fun watching him find some items on the island.

Thanks, I have not found any coins or jewelry before (I really want to), but I do enjoy finding horse shoes and other farm related items. Tonight I will post some more photos of my finds. I think the spot where I am searching used to be the home of a blacksmith. I have a few items I cannot identify that might point to whether it was a blacksmith that lived there.

Does wherever you live have a city historian and/or photo library and lot records?
City hall probably has microfiche on old properties but maybe not back far enough for that property.
Maybe business license records if he had one.

Your not alone Rayo56 when I woke up today it was -2 (Fahrenheit) outside and there is about 3in. of snow on the ground, I'm still going to try to go out metal detecting today (I have being going out most of this week). The challenge of prying a chunk of icy dirt out of the ground makes it more interesting .

I have checked and they do have records of who did what occupation but I have not found any map before 1895 or after 1750 that has any names on properties.
