It's a smallish ring and the design is 19th century to early 20th. The stone is a round ball my crappy diamond tester insists is glass. (It can't read cabs for some reason) I'm more inclined to think it's carnelian. The ring is marked, but not with anything I recognize. The stone looks red in person, but goes orange/brown when you shine a light through it.

Makes me think of the little round post earrings of the late 1970s.
    Carnelian, malachite, black onyx, lapis.
    Remember those?

Why do you think the setting is 1800s? I would have thought mid 1900s or later.
But you are more a joolie than me.

Interesting mount! Nearly gives me a Viking/medieval vibe;)
Carnelian would be my idea too:cyclops:

Cluttered - the color of the gold and the way the prongs are made. The stone in this is a round ball, no post and no glue. Add in the way the gold has oxidized and it has to be pre-1910. I'm actually wondering if it's not pre-1860.

It's hard to date something when the style has been around for a hundred years.

Dear Susan 'Ladybranch' found it for me.
I am sad every time I see her posts. Such knowledge and such kind sharing of it. Reading her posts taught me a lot. We need more conscientious gatherers of thorough knowledge, like she was.

I don’t think I had much (if any) interactions with her, but I’m sure she was as sweet and kind as others here. People speak fondly of her. It’s at least nice to know you will be remembered affectionately...:(

    She's missed.

And I'd call that a dead match. Ladybranch and INH strike again!

That is the most beautiful simple ring. I love the long prongs. Classy and elegant.

Yes, I have a ring with a very similar claw setting, but it has a pearl in it. It was bought new by a family member in Asia in the 1980s. It really is a long-lived design and I very much like the simplicity of it.

I think the pearl was more common in a setting like this. I like how the light can shine through the stone in this setting, probably one reason they did it.
