Featured Antique Gold ring with orange-red ball - wheredunnit and what's the ball?

It's a smallish ring and the design is 19th century to early 20th. The stone is a round ball my crappy diamond tester insists is glass. (It can't read cabs for some reason) I'm more inclined to think it's carnelian. The ring is marked, but not with anything I recognize. The stone looks red in person, but goes orange/brown when you shine a light through it.

 

Makes me think of the little round post earrings of the late 1970s.
Carnelian, malachite, black onyx, lapis.
Remember those?

Why do you think the setting is 1800s? I would have thought mid 1900s or later.
But you are more a joolie than me.

Cluttered - the color of the gold and the way the prongs are made. The stone in this is a round ball, no post and no glue. Add in the way the gold has oxidized and it has to be pre-1910. I'm actually wondering if it's not pre-1860.

That is the most beautiful simple ring. I love the long prongs. Classy and elegant.

 

Yes, I have a ring with a very similar claw setting, but it has a pearl in it. It was bought new by a family member in Asia in the 1980s. It really is a long-lived design and I very much like the simplicity of it.

 

I think the pearl was more common in a setting like this. I like how the light can shine through the stone in this setting, probably one reason they did it.

 

The listing says it sold may-2018 for $199

 

Mine sold in 2020 for about $85. Times have changed.
