I kind of disagree with that.

Personally, I have seen people use commas because they aren't unfamiliar with how to write the date "properly". If it is not American, then you could guess that it says 10/3 as opposed to 3/10....but, otherwise....I do not agree with that, either.

Seriously??? I have never seen that.:bookworm: Wow....take back what I said, then.
I suppose the differences in numbers signifying month and day may still be relevant.
SEE? You MUST make mistakes in order to learn!! I am still "Gobsmacked" at that, however. (Was that good?) ;)

Thank you, OBB! I never mind being wrong, when the correct answer forthcoming is given in a constructive fashion.

There you go. ;) They also use commas instead of decimal points.

That Maury sounds lovely however I don't know if he ever did any pottery. Shame that he is lost.

    How about me what?
    @janetpjohn
The only one we found so far. He was a WWII veteran and soldiers did all kind of crafts.
    Or maybe it’s a different person ...

It would be a bit unusual for an American to use commas if it's a date. Anything is possible though.

I was just curious if you had known Europeans that used commas for the dates after OBB mentioned it. It was just a question. :D

I think some may use commas but not when there are only digits involved. More likely something like 3 October, 1944. I don’t think it’s very common to write 3,10,44. Maybe some would use dots or slashes like 3.10.44 or 3/10/44 but commas.... not really
But we are talking informal writing, so, everything is possible. It’s a date on art piece so why not even write it as 3*10*44 or whatever...

Maury as a surname is typical of southern France, I don't know if that helps. If French, the person's name could be M.T.E. Maury, the way it is written on the bottom.
    I don't know if the French use commas in a date, @kyratango , @popsycat ?

If anyone has read 'Montaillou' by Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, the main character is called Pierre Maury. The book is also translated in English.:)
Piere Maury did not make any dinosaurs.:playful:

No commas in dates in France...
We would write 3-10-44 or 03/10/1944:)

Thanks, kyra. We would also write 3-10-44, meaning the third of october, not the tenth of march, like they would in the US.
