I said it was a clip but not sure. I think either a dress or fur clip. It is 2 1/2" long and 1 1/4" wide at the widest point. My Great Grandmother gave it to me but didn't tell me exactly what it is. Any info would be appreciated.

Lucky you...it's a beautiful clip and with those lovely jewel tones, could be worn with almost anything.
With the weight the mass of stones would be, I'm guessing it was probably intended as a fur clip, although it would look great on a dress constructed of a sturdy material like wool, or perhaps it could be worn on a belt or hat.

I've seen a many clips, but none as colorful as this one. Maybe Czech? It is a keeper! Really a beauty. Your great grandmother had nice taste.

Always a dress clip! A fur clip has 2 prongs (like 2 pin stems) attached to the clip mechanism, like this:

Thanks for telling me it is a dress clip! Would anyone like to take a guess at the age? I have no idea.

The back of the clip looks to date back to an Art Nouveau time period, the front rectangles border on Art Deco styling. I would date it to be 1920s-1930s and I think it is a shoe clip due to the sharp prongs on the back of the clippy part.

Not a shoe clip, the clip part is way too long. Imagine how that would dig into your toes :woot:

This is what the back of a shoe clip looks like, much shorter:

I agree with the 1920s-30s date.

Thanks for showing the difference. I guess that brings it down to a dress clip. I always thought it was a fur clip since my Great Grandmother had a lot of furs.

I'd say 30s. and Czech is a good bet. Dress clips were originally made for sweetheart necklines, and those and the clips both disappeared during WWII. The fur clips may have come back after the War; I'm not as sure of those.

I see art nouveau as well as Vienna Secession influence (e.g. Klimt.) Would think earlier rather than later.

I haven't researched period shoes for women, but a 2" long clip wouldn't dig into toes if the shoes were higher, something just after the "boots" era. I really do like this piece. I have a hard time thinking anyone would dig the prongs of the clip part into the fabric of a dress front!
