Hand-me-down painting

    This painting used to hang in my grandparent's home in Toronto, and I'd like to know a bit more about it. I've done some internet searching and found one and perhaps two other paintings by Irene M Ward, but have no idea if this painting is important/valuable (and I'm not referring to monetary value).

    As you can see it is not in the best of shape, and it really needs a good cleaning (grandpa was a smoker).

    It's oil on canvas (marked on the back "Rowney & Co, London, Quality F") and crudely assembled.

    The date of the painting appears to be 190x, which would be just before my grandpa's voyage to Canada from Britain (although there's nothing to suggest it couldn't have been bought in Canada at a later date).

    BTW: The date looks like 1906 to me.

    I think it is the subject matter. I don't find that particular picture of impending crash to be pleasing.

    However, the ice skating and the gentlemanly manners are more pleasing. At least to me.

    And I love the skates they're wearing....have a similar pair hanging in my kitchen!!!!

    I too think '06....IMO!
