    FullSizeRender.jpg IMG_0471.JPG IMG_0472.JPG Hi,
I have a silver spoon which I would like some advice on please. After hunting for ages I think I have finally found a piece of silver on my travels rather than silver plate. I have used the internet and I think I have narrowed it down to the following
    Maker - Elkington & Co
    Place - Birmingham
    Date - 1940
    Design - Chippendale
I can only find details of the silver plate version on the internet so not sure if I have got this right.
Please could someone who is familiar with the Silver Hallmarking system tell me if I have got this correct and if so how much this spoon should be insured for (if at all). It weighs 11g

    Thank you
    Carrie

It's ok. We're all still learning here and some still don't do this. :p

    Welcome, Ca wood!

You do appear to have the hallmarks figured out correctly. Whether the design is Chippendale is something I do not know.

Excellent, I've finally worked out how to read the Hallmarks then. My 11 year old son and I picked it up today after I told him to look for anything with a lion. Granted he had to sift through a box full of cutlery to find it but he had good fun doing it. He's thrilled to have finally found silver treasure with me. Thank you for confirming that I identified it correctly.

Ah. I only know about the flatware "replacement services" here in the US. Did you get the pattern name from one over there? Their piece price would also be a decent guide for the highest likely value, which you might use to see whether it's worth insuring.

Our big one (Replacements dot com) does not have any listings for a "Chippendale" pattern by Elkington.

No, I found an image on google of a spoon which was the same shape and design and followed the link. But it had Elkington Plated on the hallmark instead of the lion image.http://www.ebay.ie/itm/ELKINGTON-Cu...334727?hash=item4170341147:g:BvMAAOSweW5VQK~l
I would imagine the silver version would cost more than the silver plate version so quite a nice little find seeing as I only paid 10p for it. It was really dirty and took a bit of elbow grease to get it nice and shiny again. I think they may have just thrown it in the box with all the stainless steel spoons without realising it was silver.

I've just had a nose on the replacements website you suggested - I have used it before when researching bone china but hadn't realised it had silverware on it too. Very handy to know for when I find my next treasure :)

    10p was a steal!

The other approach you could take since you've weighed it would be to calculate "melt value" using the spot price for silver.

A single sterling spoon isn't usually worth enough to consider listing separately on your homeowner's insurance.

Super chuffed with our steal. If I can get my mini-treasure hunter to part with it then I may pop it on EBay and see what happens - it's good fun to see what happens with the bidding and it will give him some more treasure hunting pennies :)

I love sterling silver:). I'm not sure I'd get my hopes too high selling it on eBay but you might make a bit. I love the hunt!

You didn't mention the length but I searched assuming demi tasse size by the weight. Here is a fancy set of 6 that are slightly more in weight per spoon that sold for $39.99 for 6 including shipping.

Silver isn't too high right now and sadly neither is the pound:(

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/311745207828

I'd expect to get about £5 for that. Which isn't a bad return for 10 pence.

I have found that companies that have the same pattern in silver and in electroplate - Do Not give the patterns the same name.

So I would expect your sterling piece to have a different pattern name.

Oh and kudos to you for teaching your son to search for treasures.

I agree with OBB, about 4 to 5 quid. Orphan spoons usually end up in the scrap pile. Well worth 10p. though.
