    Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

    The last of the find in that box of dishes was a small - 6 1/2" tall - candlestand that was given to my parents in the late Thirties, which is when they were married, so maybe a wedding gift(??). I'll probably see if one of their grandkids would like it, but what would you call the little dish in the candlestand? Am also wondering if these were manufactured or if my Dad might have made it.......

    Those legs look like they were adapted from the handles used to remove burner plates from old wood-burning stoves.

    The little dish is called a bobeche, usually glass in a standard candlestick and is intended to catch wax drips.
    Your candlestick is quirky and fun and I hope it stays in your family, just in case your Dad did make it.

    Basically you don't know where it came from, because your dad would not have made it and then given it to themselves as a wedding present, would he?:shame:

    Are you sure it is that old?
    It sort of looks like the kind of things that blacksmiths sell today at craft shows.
    Any chance this was given at a later date?

    Cluttered, the 'wedding gift' idea is a guess. He COULD have made & given it to my Mom as a gift.....they didn't have the 'proverbial' pot to pee in back then!!! My Dad was a Machinist first (working for a much older brother-in-law learning the trade) and later became a Tool & Die Maker, so I know he would have been capable of it, but I don't think that's my first thought the more I think about it......they married at 19 & 18....would he have had the talent at that age??? But I STRONGLY believe it IS that old, as there is a handwritten note, by me, that I put with it when Mom gave it to me (just don't remember when she gave it to me.....I think when WE were first married), but the note she dictated to me says they (Mom & Dad) got it when they were first married in the late 1930s (precisely 1937!).

    @Aquitaine
    Merry Christmas
    Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude. I was just pointing out that the statements seemed contradictory. If your mom said it was a wedding present, it might be possible it was made by the brother in law your dad was working for.

    I could fix and make many things by 18...and I lived in a busy city...and had pretty much zip for tools/equipment access.
    Back then it was even more likely especially if on a farm or some such area where you had to learn to make things work and last. You had to learn to weld, gas weld at least, along with some blacksmithing.
