    21” tall x 21” long x 13” deep

Note the carving details, all mortise and tenon, no screws or other fasteners. Previous guesses- bike rack (duh, lol), cradle, my guess is to hold wool ready to be spun. I don’t think it goes in a barn as a hay rack because of the carved decorations

Notice in pic #2 on the left hand side, the front piece can move forward as if to act like a clamp of sorts

Would like to know age, purpose and origin. Thanks in advance!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

A good-sized magazine rack? Probably not, but just a guess. Welcome to Antiquers!

Hay rack. They were often ornate when made for stables.

Just wondering why no gnaw marks and what the clamp is for?

They weren't for eating from, they were storage - up high in smart stables.Clamp held it in, then released it out.

If for storing hay, it doesn't seem like it would hold enough to have much practical use.

I don't fully understand the clamp mechanism from the photos.

If you look at the second pic, the piece of wood in the front is split in the center. Then look all the way over to the left. The arm that comes straight out has an opening where the split piece of wood can slide out just a little. Difficult to explain, sorry

I can't say that it isn't a hay rack or that they haven't been used as temporary storage racks however around here horses actually do eat from them. It keeps hay up off the floor of the stall and it looks a bit lightweight for that. If for animals maybe something like a goat?

If you mean chopped, which is what we'd call it here, then quite probably. Shorter lengths.

I'm thinking that liveauctioneers is pretty flaky on this one, especially as it simply says "continental". I've had a look through a few references, books and online, can't see a comparable. And where would the spoons go?
