I am with @clutteredcloset49 It's probably a ladies' vanity table (were there ever men's vanities?]. The shallow recess would have held a pane of rather thick glass, now removed. I saw vanities of this type when I lived in London, they were probably from the 1920's or '30s however. But the glass was there so that overflow from perfume flacons and cream jars would not accidentally damage the wood surface.

 

p.s. @charlie cheswick A mahogany frame mirror would probably look better than Vincent's portrait above it... just a thought.
