    Hello

This painting was handed down to me recently and i'm interested if anyone knows anything about it. There are memories of it being hung up as far back as the 1920 - 1930's in a great aunts house in the Syracuse, NY area but don't know anything else besides that.

On the back of the canvas frame I believe says Humboldt Cty on the Pacific or Humboldt City on the Pacific in cursive. No signature. An aunt paid to have it repaired 12/20/71. it says in pen "repaired 12/20/71 by R.B.M." and has a 3x3" white canvas patch on the back of the original canvas. I've taken it out of the frame and couldn't find any other markings. Canvas is around 24" x18"

    Thanks!!!

Humboldt County, California has a very long coastline on the Pacific and lots of little nooks and crannies.

As for time frame, the style certainly looks older than the timeframe in which you can place it in your family. I take it there was no evidence of a signature when you had it out of the frame?

Is that white line on the right side a tear?

Hello. I took it out of the frame and couldn't find a signature. The white line you reference is a patch. Looks like there was a tear there at some point that was repaired.

Four major rivers in Humboldt county. Try the Klamath, Eel, Trinity and Mad. Landscape might fit one of them.

Turn of the century bucolic landscape. Decorative painting that may not depict an actual scene. The designation on the back for Humbolt might be where it was purchased and could have been painted there .... or not. A lot of tourists brought back paintings from CA and the Pacific Northewest as souvenirs. Most of the painters are lost to history.

Your painting would have been done fairly early in California state history so worth further investigation. If you haven't found it already, check out the view that Joseph John Engelhart painted of Mt. Shasta. Very similar to yours.
