    Mansons2005 Nasty by Nature, Curmudgeon by Choice

    Once, a loooong time ago, a workman used a tool like this to put new tacks on a chair he reupholstered in our home (tack on end, hit with tack hammer on the other end). Of course, since that was over 50 years ago and I am close to senile, who knows for sure.............

    Looks like a centre punch, it may have become magnetized due to being struck so many times.

    I have a similar tool for upholstery tacks. Mansons you are not close to senile yet.

    I've always heard that type of tool called a "nail set" and the most common type is used to set headless nails at or below the surface of the wood. It serves to keep the hammer away from the wood surface which would get ugly hammer dents otherwise.
