Just wondered if this chap was worth anything, purely based on the fact that the QE2 was decommissioned. He was taken from the theatre bar. al jolson 1.jpg al jolson 2.jpg

I doubt it though someone may like to have him.
That provenance is specious to say the least.
You may be able to hunt through QE2 history for photos it may be in, there's probably a page on her on the net but I can't imagine showing it there would add much value.

And that photograph would have been as offensive in 1969, when the Queen Elizabeth II began operating, as it is now.

Maybe you're like me... I seem to have a vast amount of coincidences happen to me.
I first answered this post just over 3 hours ago.
I am reading the 4/01 issue of Reminisce magazine and in the; 'Can you give me a hand' section someone has asked for help to find some ephemera from the QE2's 5/17/55 crossing. :bag:

They spelt Theatre as Theartre and added QE2 later in different ink, .
    Provenance is zero IMO.

No offence guys, but my mum or 'mom' for you American fellows, worked on the QE2. Why do you think we have it? ;-). This discussion is not to question the authenticity of origin, as this DID come from the QE2. What I was asking was the value in relation to QE2 being decommissioned/a little bit of history.

Family history is great, but if I were going to buy this I'd need something more than " Mum worked there " .
    No offence meant.....none taken.

    ( oh...& that's a Canadian point of view..)

Its a picture of Al Jolson, its value is what someone is willing to pay for it.
The value in relation to QE2 being decommissioned is zero without provenance.

We had no idea why you have it. Why should we?

If I remember correctly the QE II maiden voyage was in 1969. Am I correct?

Was his picture on QE II or its predecessor? Or either?

the QE2 :) also I find it offensive that you think this great picture of Al Jolson is offensive.... checkmate? ;)

Al, was originally hanging in the Theatre bar, then he was taken down along with many others and put into what the staff nicknamed 'the pig' which was a grotty staff bar essentially.

As others have pointed out, just because you have a relative who worked on a famous ship doesn't mean that's where the photograph came from, even if it's written on the back, in what, as Davy points out - is questionable at best.

I don't personally find the blackface photograph to be offensive or not offensive, it doesn't actually bother or upset me one bit. But I'm with the others - I would find it highly unlikely that it was ever on board the QE2.

Family stories often get mixed up. I remember one woman who swore up and down that her great-grandparents had brought an antique sewing machine all the way to Australia from Germany way back in the 1860s or something, despite the fact that the machine was American, and made in 1900, all because it was what her parents had told her.

everyone's an expert..... question it all you like it doesn't make it so. I do know where my parents worked in the 80's, and they're still alive. So unless you're calling my family liars, or you worked there yourself and have no record of them being there, I suggest you keep you expertise to yourself. Also, please read the description. This is NOT to question the authenticity of the item as we KNOW where it came from.

I honestly think that if you asked most people, their answer would be that the portrait or photograph is only worth what someone is willing to pay for a blackface photograph of Al Jolson. Any connection with the QE2 will mean nothing until you can find undeniable proof, sufficient to convince a highly skeptical third party, and family anecdotes aren't undeniable proof.

So to answer your question at the top of the thread - What is its value based on its connection the QE2, I would say negligible.

You asked a question that would bring all kinds of answers and then you would berate those of us who took time to do research and give up ideas and expertise to try and help you and YOU'RE offended!
It's not the first time either so I'll save you the trouble of answering me by blocking your posts.

Armed with the hearsay information you have, put it in an auction or list it on eBay and see if someone buys it, then you will discover its value.

Here is a lamp that was in the QE2 Theater Bar before that bar was turned into the Golden Lion in 1994. The lamp is a red/burnt orangy color that easily fits into the pics that Debora and Clutter links showed. Like others, I couldn't find this pic anywhere on the QE2. Also like others have said, with the QE2 commissioned in 1969, it seens hardly unlikely anything of this type would be included in the decor because the late 1960 was a sensitive time. They would have gone out of their way not to offend anyone.

    Hi,
It could have been on the QE do not think the QE2. The date would have been right. I sailed on the QE in 1949 but I was not allowed in the bar. I think someone added the QE2 and meant the QE. The QE was named for Elizabeth the Queen's mother who was Queen Elizabeth BUT NOT Elizabeth the Queen.
